A crawler is a program that visits Web sites and reads their pages and other information in order to create entries for a search engine index. The major search engines on the Web all have such a program, which is also known as a "spider" or a "bot." And it uses a special algorithm for waiting between successive server requests so that it doesn't affect response time for other users.

Crawlers are small robots created by search engines. These robots are sent by search engines to all the pages of websites to check if there is any update or not. If they get any update, they carry that information to the search engine. Once the search engine is happy, they again send the crawlers to the website after sometime to check whether their is update or not. The more the update, the happier will be the search engine and the more number of times the crawlers will visit your website.
If there is no update the search engine will cache the page and will keep it in the archive. They will keep showing the page from the cache. This is not recommended. You should keep on updating so that crawlers keep visiting your site.

Basically, web crawler acts like a librarian who has all the knowledge of the books in his library. he is responsible for guiding you to the right resource. web crawler works in the same way. web crawler helps in web indexing. web crawlers gather information about different websites and fetch results whenever a user type keyword on google search results.

Nice question, First of all a web crawler is bot or you can say its part of formula which is designed by search engines to read the data or html coding which you have used in your websites like meta keywords, meta titles, meta description because crawler reads specific language like html, dhtml or others instead of english and other normal language. Now come the use of crawler as per my point of view the main base of keyword and website ranking is crawler because its crawl the data and choose best and user friendly data to the top so the user can easily go to the best and useful website for them.

The web crawlers are used mainly by web search engines. They are used for indexing. So Google, Yahoo and Bing are good examples of it. A web crawler retrieves a web page, finds and follows the links on that page, retrieves those newly found pages, finds and follows those links, etc.
