SEO company vs Write Content with Outreach

We want to improve our rankings and I'm still very sceptical about using an SEO. Most of them ask for £3000/$4000 a month and dont really disclose what they do.

I just wander if we are better off in general writing really good content ourselves and spending the rest of that £2,500 (minus cost of content) on in house outreach and the occasional link that costs i.e. membership of something..

Any thoughts?

    If you can spend 3k pounds then I will say that hire some good content writers start writing good content that can get published in high authority blogs. You will get much more in return rather than hiring any SEO professional without any prior knowledge.

      How about if you hire an SEO company that's great at SEO? (Why is the choice an SEO with no knowledge?)

          I got that. I'm trying to figure out why. I am specifically surprised by the alternatives you use: "You will get much more in return rather than hiring any SEO professional without any prior knowledge."

          Why would anyone either hire an experienced writer or an inexperienced SEO? That's all I wanna know!

    (hint: I can do that). Over time, it's money better spent.
