Hello all,

I've noticed in my Google Webmasters account that I have 11x 404 error pages on my website:
project-category/hospital/
locations/
dt_gallery/hospital/
project/emergency-ward/
2016/09/27/
project-category/ward/
project-category/patients/
services/event-security/)
2016/09/
2016/09/29/security-guards/
2016/09/27/hello-world/

I'm going to 301 redirect the "services/event-security/)" to "services/event-security/" without the the bracket on the end but i'm not sure what to do about the others because most of them are old URLS that came from the original WordPress template sample data but I didn't manage to delete them in time before Google found them. From reading around online some people say to 301 redirect them all to similar pages but I don't have any pages similar, some people say to 301 redirect them all to the home page and some people say just to ignore them, also some people say they will hurt my rankings and some people say they won't so I really don't know what is the best thing to do with them? I have also been building backlinks for the past 6 months and my keywords are still not ranking and i'm wondering if this is because of the 404 errors? I ranked websites before and normally have them ranking in about 3-4 months so i'm starting to get really worried now.

Thanks in advance
P.s my website is www.tgfsecurity.co.uk

Mainly backlinks on high authority sites PR 7 - 10. Do you have any ideas what I should do about the 404s? Thanks

To be honest you may not rank 6 months from now either unless you make some changes to your link building. A lot has changed . Penguin, Panda, and the so called Fred. You are getting really poor quality links with blog comments and guest books (heavily spammed ones with hundreds of links on a page). those only work on the weakest of keywords nowadays. Google has cracked down a lot with the algo changes.

You can Use the Redirection code for 404 error, it reduces the 404 error in your site because when someone hit that URL then You got this issue. 404 page redirect on your homepage of your site.

About the 404s - I`d do the following:

    1. 301 redirect the pages you can (the ones that have the relevant pages to redirect to, like with the security/) one)

    2. simply unlink the other 404 pages from your site (there are lots of tools that allow to find all internal links leading to any certain page), and there should be no issues. There`s no problem with the 404 pages that are still indexed in Google for some time if they don`t make broken links on your site, and eventually they will just disappear from indexes naturally.
