Everyone knows that browsers don't always report where visitors came from when they arrive at a website. When they don't report where they were in the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) referrer header, often the traffic is considered "Direct" -- which really means, "we have no clue where they came from, maybe they typed the URL in or hit a bookmark."

Sometimes these types of traffic could be organic !

So you should not bother about it. It doesn't have any impact on SEO ranking.

  • Direct traffic is almost always either returning visitors, so it doesn't affect your seo in a negative way but it also means there is not really new traffic to the site. Referral traffic is best way of getting new visitors and possible new leads.

When a user enters the website URL in the browser's address bar, this is how direct traffic is generated. Direct traffic is good, as it comes directly from the target audience and there are less chances of getting irrelevant users/visitors.

Man, so many people here need to give up their dreams of ever competing online, they give out such poor advice. The amount of direct traffic has no bearing on your SEO or where your pages will rank.

Yes right Dave and I will offer clarity.

Time on site tracked by google analytics means F all to your ranking

There are only two factors to SEO

      On page SEO & Links

Anything else at this point in time does nothing or is snake oil

I highly doubt it could affect SEO, but it makes you wander if a visitor comes to the site via Chrome, what data google is storing about the visit to that website and if it will have any bearing in future when making industry comparisons

Wow! (That's all I can really say here.)

We've got the O.P. asking about direct traffic's influence on SEO and somebody emphatically stating it matters and "will drive you to #1", with zero credible sources to support this ludicrous claim. Then, he launches into endorsing poor converting social networks which have nothing to do with SEO or direct traffic.

      What are people here smoking?

It wont effect your SEO until its limited. Too much of direct traffic will really cause issue to your #SEO. Consider some social traffic and search traffic.

Unless Google uses data from Google Analytics in their search algo (which they say they don't), then direct really doesn't do anything for you. That being said, people who come to your website directly at some point, will often search for you some point in the future. They'll sometimes search for reviews on your company or other information the first time they go to the site. So there is typically some amount of organic traffic that rides on the coat tails of direct traffic.

No, those people's original search are already accounted for in your organic search numbers. It is the direct traffic riding on the coat tails of organic.Organic can never ride on the coat tails of direct.

Ofcourse Direct traffic is good for SEO but if came from different different Ip address. If we get daily basic direct traffic from one IP address that is not beneficial but will not harmful for our site.

Straight answer is there is no advantage on SEO because of direct traffic.

    But here is a situation.

You went directly to flipkart dot .com

If a lot of people directly go to flipkart , then the site is popular or they are doing some sort of branding. You visited the site and found useful.

After sometime when you searched for a mobile phone and flipkart, listing came on results and you clicked on it ignoring others. So the this site received a user because of their earlier branding campaign, which is obviously good in terms of SEO.

I think that if you have more direct traffic is very good because it comes from your target. For google it's ok, but maybe you should try to work on your organic, it's a good way to find another audience and the ranking of your page will increase.

  • Definitely direct traffic is the best traffic as you dont have to pay for the same also that will not effect your SEO.
My blog receives direct traffic its not much but it is accetable approx 600 per day.
You may check the same here

  • Hello,

Direct Traffic does not affect your site in any way or affect your rankings. Referral traffic is the best way to get new users to your site.

    Hope this helps!

Direct traffic means people remember your domain and return to it for whatever reason. This in itself reflects some level of authority that may be reflected online, and from there influence your ranking, such as through links.

The more direct traffic you attract, the more chances you have that this traffic will influence your ranking in some way by building your authority.

From my experience, it doesn't. What I could imagine is that you received some new links from your unexpected visitors which helped your ranking. As Google also says that they don't use Google Analytics data for ranking purposes it would be very difficult to measure a traffic increase.

It doesn't influence rankings directly, however, there is a small chance direct traffic influences your general level of online presence and authority and that, in turn, influences your rankings. That's unproven though.

Google wants to rank the most authoritative pages to answer a particular search query.

Your direct traffic level tends to correlate with - and influence - the number of links and general online presence you have developed over time, and thus your authority.

Yes, referral traffic reflects click-throughs from such links. However, a proportion will also type in your domain name directly rather than clicking on the link. This is for various reasons such as:

Making a hand-written note of a web page to look at later.
Copying the link and pasting into a new browser/browser window/tab.

Google does not have access to the traffic statistics on every website. If Google Analytics is installed, then Google does have access to this information. As with everything, this should be viewed with a somewhat skeptical eye. The data likely does not have a direct impact, but I believe that the data is used to help drive algorithm updates.

Direct traffic doesn't effect seo ranking. Because it directly hit by URL without knowing the browser that from where the traffic comes.

Unless that direct traffic visitor goes and drops a link to your website afterwards, or leaves a comment, it has nothing at all to do with SEO.
