Want To Keep Low Profile On Google

I have got a client who wants to hire me to ensure that their website stays low profile on search engines. The challenging part is that their publication has been published by very well known names such as CNN.
So here is my question:
How do I ensure that these publications are not ranked on Google or any other search engines for that matter? Is there any way I can ensure that the publications that are published by CNN or any other well-known names don't end up ranking on the top of Google?

Your feedback will be highly appreciated.

      LOL

This forum has become the most bizarre place. People now come here to learn how NOT to be ranked in search engines.

This thread reminded me of a memory of a gas station attendant that I once knew in the early 80s that would always respond to drivers that pulled over to ask for directions with "You can't get there from here, you have to go back where you came from."

I guess it makes sense for someone that knows nothing about SEO to ask a question about search engines within an SEO forum. But this is something that they could have discovered instantly if they only knew how to perform a search on a search engine.

To use an analogy, it is like someone that drove to a far away town to just to ask how to find something located in the town they came from.

It makes as much sense as making an appointment to meet a professional mathematician just to ask "If I own 2 calculators and then purchase 2 more, how many calculators do I now own?"

Would the typically mathematician answer the question with a simple reply of "four"?

Or, would they ask "You came all this way to ask this question?"

If you want to know how to avoid being listed in Google, why not google it?

That is what Google is for, is it not?

No one could answer that question better than Google itself, and no place could be easier to find the answer, yet they go to the trouble of starting a new thread to ask a question that could have been answered in far less time by a simple Google search.

This is has become one really weird place.

    Is that a serious question?

On his own site, your client can tell a search engine not to index or follow a page by using robot text - how do you expect to stop CNN pages from ranking?

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

Dear all, thanks for the prompt reply. Their products haven't gotten to a stage where they would have liked it to be at, hence, they want to take a step back until they are 100% sure. Their product has gotten a lot of exposure already which isn't working out in their favor at the moment. That's why they have approached us to do this kind of job.
We did explain to them that this isn't a good idea but at the end of the day you gotta do what clients ask for.

You're not going to bury CNN on the SERPs, it's done.

What's the niche? Is it weight loss?

I had a similar task with a "personality" that had gotten some very widely distributed inflammatory news story's published by the press and it was literally costing her work and relationships. The best I could offer was Alternative Results that ranked higher than the results she didn't want on page one. We created a persona site and facebook page and twitter and blog with lots of content and optimized the heck out of it so that when you searched for her that consumed the entire front page of most searches... since no one goes to page 2 it resoved almost all of the problem rather quickly.

Sure but that's a lot more difficult to pull off when the competition (ex: CNN, etc...) is an authority.

The question is, how active is the client drama on the web? Is it United Airlines type drama where everyone knows about the subject?

this was not an easy project and it took 6 months to accomplish the news story was on a high authority newspaper website and a follow up written in society magazine published in print and on-line not exactly CNN but in her city that story was big news...

Such a strange question. So they still want to show up in Google, but they want to rank low. Is that correct? It's really easy to take them out completely by just adding a noindex tag to the whole site. If you just want them to not rank well, then maybe you could disavow links coming from prominent sites like CNN.
Not sure if I understand the question though, because you say that you don't want the CNN articles to rank well either. There's really no way to control that.
