New to internet marketing. First steps?

Hello everyone

I'm quite new to this field in terms of practical application, but know about the theory behind it.
My plan is to start a local SEO business seeing as where I live has the most small businesses. I feel I can do well in this market.
My concern is that the local SEO competition may be a little harder to break through.
My question is does anyone have any advice on practice sites, seminars, or exercises I could perform before potentially ruining my reputation out of the gate with clients due to my inexperience.

My suggestion is to start small, meaning do SEO for some local business whom you know, then see that the client really gets a benefit based on the goals you setup. Then you start building your reputation as an SEO consultant.

Great to hear that you are starting local seo business, so for this you must have to optimize your Google My Business Page (GMB) then get real product/site reviews, make your site fast and mobile optimize as well.
Follow the Google's Local Guide Lines.

The way the SEO business works is that you have to show them immediate benefit of your service.

So, first you need to buy few Blog sites.
It is important that each have at least 20-50 posts and the domain that is at least a year old.
You can start few your own Blogs, and find some freelancers to write you a content (it is pretty cheap).
This Blog you will use for your back links.

Next, pick business that have decent website already, go there and tell them that you can improve their rankings very fast, at small cost (be sure to explain that this will bring more business to their company), and before they commit to you in any way, that you will show them practical results.
If they agree to test your claims, put some links through articles on your blogs, leading to their main website. This will have significant impact on their ratings.
Now, week, later you can go back and show them the results. Tell them that you will leave these back links for free entire month, and that you will call them day or two before this period ends.
Leave them your price list, and go to the next prospect.

After this trial period one of two things will happen:
1. They will have increase in their business and they will take your service; or
2. They will see no benefit, and you can remove back links to their website.

If you are new to SEO, it is best to hire some student at first to do it for you, and you focus only on getting clients.

  To my understanding, search engines only rank relevant content, so if I buy a tech blog, even with high ranking, it wouldnt help, say, a local dentist office.

  Blog post have to be relevant to targetet website.
  If you have a tech blog, it can have an article about new dentist drills, or cool new chairs etc.
  They have lots of technical gadgets these days - you get the idea.

  The reason for my post is to get more input from people who are already doing this. Not nessisarily from a guru. I do take advice from the gurus aha, but it's better to have people who are closer ahead of me than someone who is wayy ahead of me. Helps me establish steps

SEO is just one of the niches of internet marketing, if you are able to know the basics of SEO then I think you can do it. Besides onpage optimization in SEO has already have a guideline you can follow, offpage optimization on the other hand is the challenge though as well as marketing.
