Hey byalik those look like impressive results. Congratulations!

I assume that you are referring to AJ Madison on those results. In your opinion what was the thing you did that had the most impact on AJ Madison's SEO?

The #1 thing for me initially was fixing technical issues. Duplicate content on ecommerce sites is the largest technical issue I usually see. Now my focus is on content marketing and authority development.

        Hi Byalik,

I design authentic cuckoo clocks, reinvented for an American aesthetic, and import them from a top-notch factory in the Black Forest. My goal is to BE cuckoo clocks.

From what I've read on the subject and from the results I see with my site, yes content is key. It's a long term commitment that really does pay off. Slow and steady wins the race.
        • I write about new designs in development.
        • Write articles about cuckoo clocks, to include in-depth histories on companies, people, towns, etc as I travel back and forth and learn more.
        • Create how-to and trouble shooting videos. I'm amazed at how much these are watched and the traffic they bring.

One way I know I'm gaining traction is that people contact me about their Schneider (the manufacturer) clocks, not the ones I designed.

Do you have any other suggestions for developing my authority? It really goes hand-in-hand with content, doesn't it?

        Thanks!

        ~Jodie

    Ok I'll bite

What are some of the most interesting SEO changes / AB tests you've run so far that you can share? To clarify, specifically speaking for eCommerce business and were there any implementations that resulted in a significant uptake of organic traffic that surprised you? What you thought might have worked, but failed - vs - what you thought would fail, that resulted in said significant uptake?

TLDR: how'd you do it? lol

      Marcus,

Fixing technical issues surrounding the website was the #1 thing for us. Right now we are experimenting with various A/B tests. Example of one is including product reviews on category pages. For ecommerce sites, it's very important to have unique content on category pages you're trying to get ranked. Also, trying to avoid competing pages by consolidating pages that may be targeting similar keywords. Once a site is fully optimized from an SEO standpoint, all the technical issues are fixed, that's when you can focus on creating great content and doing outreach to build relationships and acquire new links.

      • doesnt Google consider including product reviews on category pages rich snippet spamming (as they are not a review of that category but o an individual product) ?

Does this mean that I shouldn't have a page about the development of clock, "On the Drawing Board: The Quilt Shop Cuckoo Clock" with my keyword "Quilt Shop Cuckoo Clock" as well as the product page with the same keyword?

Because most of the questions are very poor.

The canonical work I've done on the site and removing old sections with noindex tags have had the biggest impact so far. It's mostly been on site work (optimization, linking structure, etc..). Now I'm focusing on authority development through content marketing and link building. For example, we're now #1 for appliance...when I started, we were nowhere to be found for a long time.

            Really?

From what I've read you've avoided most questions.

What's the point of asking other people to ask questions If you're going to nit pick until the perfect question is asked? Why bother?

It would be more logical to stop running in circles and just pick one thing you've done and explain it in detail.

So far I haven't seen you do a single thing for ranking pages. Typical IM forum hype.

Ok here is an easy example. I've implemented canonical tags across the entire site, as well as added noindex to portions of that site that shouldn't have been indexed. We've went from over 4million indexed pages to now under 800,000. How's that ?

He's probably unimpressed because you joined that company less than a year ago and yet are showing stats (and taking credit) that show a steady climb in traffic 6-7 years before you ever worked for the company (if you in fact do).

Again, really light on the details.

What kind of canonical problems did you identify? Show some examples. Since you have already shared the site, some specific examples should not be an issue.

What type of pages did you feel should not be indexed and why?

If you are really looking to help, just saying that you implemented some canonical tags and noindexed some pages really does not benefit anyone. What type of pages? Why? What happened when you did so?

Trying to decipher as well, I suspect he means how do you manage the image SEO. (Alt tagging, keywording images etc..).

Considering there's 1000's of products - how do you maintain them?
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11090561].message }}
        • Profile picture of the author byalik
Ah. The alt tags are automated based on the product title & other information we want to include. Also all the images are included in our XML sitemap. One thing we don't do, which we should, is have seo friendly titles for our images. That's a different department, so hopefully eventually I can get them to start doing that.

Content marketing/link building. If you build high quality content and get links naturally, then this is 100% not vulnerable. But remember, SEO is a constant thing. You have to keep doing this. If you stop, and your competition doesn't, your rankings will decrease as theirs increases

    Hi Byalik,

I planning to start a coupon deals website, something similar to Groupon. I'm only having problem with organic SEO problem, because the coupon title and description will be create by the business owner and so I can't optimise it. One of the way I thought of is to include blog page into my website. Any suggestion?

Another question, what research tool you use to do keyword research? And what other tools you used that is recommend?

    Thank you

I would recommend semrush and ahrefs, but there are plenty of good tools available on the market.

You could provide instructions to your users on how they they need to write their titles & descriptions. Also, you could optimize them yourself after they enter them if you wish (and it's part of your terms of service).

I think what's most important for you is to figure out how you're going to try to compete with groupon.com, retailmenot and all those other huge sites. You have to find a unique angle, niche or some other advantage you can use.

I'm having issues replying to individual threads here. Also, this new WF layout is very difficult to use...is this just me? It's impossible to find the new replies I get emailed about.

    To answer the previous questions:

Mike Anthony- When I came on in 2016, traffic was significantly down. I wasn't taking credit from the traffic from a few years ago. Just the one starting late last year after I was able to turn things around.

Mike Friemdan - We had self referencing canonicals all across the site. So we had 4+ million pages indexed. I created a document based on our categories to determine which refinement combinations I wanted indexed. For all the rest, I created canonical rules.

    For example:
Color + Brand + product type = Good
Any other addition to that refinement would be canonicalized

    or

Energy Star (feature) + Category = Good
Any other selection to those refinements would canonicalize it (back to energy star category page)

I spent a long time going through all the various combinations across categories, creating rules and implementing the canonicals.

The result was google consolidating our pages in their index and raising our rankings.

It is an incredibly stupid layout for a forum and for having any kind of series discussions where a thread goes long with lots of replies. It is damn near impossible to follow the newest replies.

Just a total moronic design structure.

Anyhow, if you hover over your name in the top right of the screen there is an option to change to the "classic" view.

That is much easier to follow for threads like this. Well, except they made a terrible decision in how they handle quoted messages. You'll see.
