You can do SEO yourself but you must acquire the skills needed to make it successful or better contract it to the Gurus SEO Niche for just some few BUS $.

If you can place the link yourself, it is worthless for SEO. If it's an easy link to get, it is a complete waste of time. You have to get other people to DECIDE to link to your pages. They should be from sites that are relevant to your website. The more respected and powerful the website, the better it is for your SEO.

It's true but normally other people don't know about your site because your rank is low. So no back links will be created organically.

i want to say onething for you, as a seo analyst you have to learn by yourself, creating backlinks means not posting your link into best sites, you have to see relavent sites to your webite and you have to create blogs with unique content, submitting you link to directories ,classifieds and many more that too you have to check the spam scores of that domain. simply creating backlinks means you have to analyse that domain and submit the link.

you can use mozbar to check DA, PA, traffic of the website you are going to put your links. if these indexs are good you can put your backlinks, but remember do not spam.

just check the competitors backlinks and do backlinks for your site.most of the people check for the best sites for backlink but i am sure you cant find the best link with that startegy, try this one for good ranking.
