Best First Backlinks for Brand New Website?

Realizing building backlinks to quickly or choosing spammy sites can negatively effect SEO, what do people recommend as the very first few "no brainer" sites to build backlinks on for a brand new website that has no backlinks?

I know some of the best sites would be leading sites in the subject category matching the target site. I'm more interested in a handful of *specific* sites (i.e. yp.com), that are worthwhile regardless of category. This site is a local service business in a space without a lot of competition and the competition is also new businesses so I'm not anticipating it's going to take a whole lot of work.

Just wondering what currently are the "lowest hanging fruit?"

The very first start Link all social accounts with your website and start using Quora. I don't think so anything is required to do if you follow this.
Guest posting and Blog commenting also help a lot in organic traffic.
    All the best!

For a local service business, you want to make sure your NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) Listings on credible online business directories are on-point (Check out Moz Local as well). Some great free ones to submit to are:
    • BBB
    • YP
    • Angieslist
    • Hoovers
    • Merchant Circle
    • Yelp
    • Manta
    • Hotfrog
Also, social media pages, although these are not "dofollow" backlinks, and have no link juice, it is still good branding and may have an indirect correlation to rankings. I would recommend getting all your social media profiles setup and make sure they have your website listed (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube Pinterest, LinkedIn, Instagram especially).

Doing a press release with a link to your website can be a great link as well, and depending on your budget, it may be worth joining your local Chamber of Commerce, as they usually have a directory on their website which lists their members and their websites.

Wow, there is a lot of bad advice here!

TIP: You can usually judge the quality of advice here by the quality of the person's ability to string together a few grammatically correct sentences.

Find out who is linking to the sites on page one of the SERPs and try to get as many of the backlinks those sites have as you can. Those backlinks worked for them so, assuming you have anywhere near the quality of pages those sites have, they'll work for you, too.

According to Dave Hermansen, the online "stozre coach", who is a supposed SEO master, a press release is a bad idea. But hey what would I know I've only owned a six figure SEO income for 6 yrs.

If you are going to dis someone, at least get your facts correct. I did not specifically say a thing about any particular person's advice here. (Paranoid much? Are you not feeling confident in your ability to string a few grammatically correct sentences together? If so, don't worry; your grammar is just fine.)

That said, press releases will do nothing for SEO - at least in the long term (those press releases MIGHT land at the top of search for a couple of days until they are replaced by the next press release on the press release site). I'd love to see an example of a press release on any kind of decent site that is still ranking well a year later. That doesn't mean that press releases can't drive traffic if you need a quick burst of traffic for a time-sensitive event.. The question wasn't about traffic, though.

Be careful; Google just issued a warning last week about guest posts and syndicated posts published across many sites and having followed links in them - particularly keyword-rich links. Those warnings often come just before the hammer is dropped. https://webmasters.googleblog.com/20...rge-scale.html
