Instead of worrying about your site's poor rankings its better to focus on your target users first, then ranking will follow.

Updating a site has nothing to do with rankings. He could not update it for 10 years and still potentially rank in the same spot.

Very true. The only sites that need to be constantly updated are news/current events sites. Good content and good backlinks are always good, regardless of when the content was written or when the backlinks were acquired. Also the TLD doesn't matter at all. Google doesn't care whether a site is a .com, .net, .us, .in ... .anything. There is no ranking boost for being a .com.

Create amazing content that people will actually want to link to. Then, get some quality backlinks that real people decide to place on their site to yours (not the crappy backlinks that you can place yourself that so many people here still seem to think work).

    hey there

    great question..

2 things that will cause a site to rank high consistantly are a)great content b) high authority
    backlinks

    so
if their content have not changed but the ranking remains high then that site have some high authority backlinks

high authority backlinks are from websites that have been around for a while..example cnn.com..not a

site that was created say last year..

you can create these backlinks yourself if you are a handy person .....all you have to do is use your website niche

and do a google search for websites simular to yours (ex . weight loss or blog niche)
    then
signup a free account with several of them .then interact with them which will create high authority back links to your site

    ok
    talk soon

  • Add quality, unique content on a frequent basis, make sure your site is optimized properly (on page) for your targeted keywords, and build backlinks on a continuous basis.

Google does not care how frequently you add content. They do not rank websites, they rank individual pages and the correlations others (who should know better) have made in the past are nothing but a myth. Plenty of content has ranked well for many years without it ever being changed. Plenty of websites have many pages that rank at the top that have not added a single new page in years. Adding content frequently only matters for news/current event websites or if you want to target a new KW phrase that has not yet been targeted on another page of the site. If the freshness of a page helped it rank better, all brand new websites would be killing it in the search rankings.
