What are good keyword searching tools?

Personally I only have experience with Market Samurai, and I love it. One of the things I like about it is that I purchased it a few years ago and they are still updating it and making it better. There are a lot of filters you can use with it to narrow down or expand keyword searches and it evaluates your competition. If you search you can usually find it at a discount somewhere or a coupon. Hi there, thank you for your response.

I found Market Samurai by listening to Pat Flynn's SPI podcast.( I believe he has a discount code) With new tools popping up since the creation of Market Samurai, I was wondering if it still holds strong as a tool among the many, many competitors. Great to read that they have found a loyal customer in you.

In comparison to the other user interfaces I have seen so far, it looked like Market Samurai hasn't updated the program (Design) that much since its conception. I would assume this would also show up in the coding(correctly pulling data from Google etc). Given your positivity, I can safely assume the program still holds up in 2017.

Would you say the program is easy to figure out?

  They have good videos that walk you through how to use every part of it. Once you've gone through the videos then it is easy to use. At least to get the best use of the advanced features. You are right the interface hasn't changed much over the years that I have had it but I know every so often it updates and fixes to make it better all the time as far as the results that it pulls. I can't compare against the competitors though because I have only used this and it has served my needs very well.

  Once you watch the video tutorials it's easy to use and it helps to watch them because there are some advanced features and filters you will probably want to take advantage of. I know the interface hasn't changed much over the years but they still do updates and fixes from time to time.

Google Keyword Planner is the best free keyword phrase analysis tool for checking monthly searches. For evaluating competitors websites and backlinks I would recommend Ahrefs (should be able to do a 2-week trial) or SEMrush. MozPro and the free tools on Moz are a good source also.

I personally use RankTracker from SEO PowerSuite and would recommend you to try at least the free version if you haven't!

There's a cool keyword research module with like 20 sources for ideas, it also helps analyzing top competitors for a keyword and track super-local rankings.

For a newbie, I suggest that you do not go for paid SEO tools. The best tool is Google Keyword Planner. Suggest you start your research process with this. You can also try out other free seo tools such as UberSuggest, Keyword Shitter, LSIGraph (Using Semantic Keywords/ Keywords based on Searchers Intent).

I don't understand why so many people recommend Google Keyword Planner. Their monthly searches are very broad, for example 10 K-100 K. There is a huge difference between 10 K and 100 K. It's very hard to get an idea on how many people are searching for a keyword, with results like these.
Am I missing something? Thank you!

Hi creative,

Yes, you are definitely missing something.

The Keyword Planner Tool does not give me a range, it gives me actual data. You are not getting the same data because you are not also an active Google AdWords customer.

The tool is designed specifically for AdWords customers. Due to heavy abuse of the tool by non-customers Google removed the precision for non-customers. You can get the precise data by becoming an active AdWords customer.

By the way, AdWords is also a great testing environment for any kind of marketing and promotional activity. You can test various marketing messages targeting very specific user intents and get immediate measurable results. The are many many ways that using this test data can help you in a variety of different campaign types and marketing channels.

The best tool I have come across is Google Keyword Planner. It gives a very clear idea of the keywords which are mainly searched in Google.
Second best tool is Keywordtool.io . The planner gives unique keywords searched. It also includes keywords searched on Bing, YouTube, Ebay, App Store and Amazon. This helps in getting a clear idea of which keyword can be used to boost your online presence.

To check keywords of competitors, spyfu is one of the best tools. However, your keyword research does not end here. To select keywords, follow these steps:
1. Look for keywords used by competitors, make list of keywords.
2. Look into your business and its offerings. Make a list of keywords that you feel are relevant to your business.
3. Use Google's keyword planner to get similar keywords and add them to the list.
4. Now take each keyword and look for its trends on Google trends and also do a google search for the keyword. See what type of sites rank there and decide if your keyword has potential to beat the sites which are there on the top.
5. Check search volume of the keywords that you feel are relevant and select niche keywords for your business.

I hope this works for you. I have been working with Cygnet, a mobile app development company and with this method I have been able to get my company in top 10 of Google search results for almost 10 keywords. A systematic approach will give you amazing results.
