Modern seo and social practices questions

1. Is there a limit on the number of on-page keywords a website can have, before Google calls it black hat? Or what is the rule of thumb or model?

2. My SEO guy is getting lots of referrals from Facebook but doesn't say how. I don't have a business FB account. And I'm not paying for FB ads, directly. Maybe he is. I'm paying him $0.75 per click. I see in GA the leads but I have no idea what the ads (if there are any) look like. And GA doesn't detail out what FB page, or pages, the FB leads are coming from.

3. I have growth in "Direct" leads... as GA shows. I imagine it's from the seo guy's work... where non-traditional ads, or marketing is happening. Can't believe people see my paid or organic listings then type my URL into the top of their browser, instead of just clicking the listing.

4. Are referrals from website-analytics.online, site-auditor.online, rank-checker.online and the like actually profitable? I sell very high-end teak outdoor furniture.

    1. No. There are pages out there that rank for thousands of different things.

    2. Can't you just ask the guy to show you the ads? If you are paying him, he should be willing to share what he is doing. It is your business and you are ultimately responsible for the messages being put out on its behalf. You should see any ads being run and make sure they fit with your company's vision and goals (not to mention to make sure they are ethical). Are they converting into sales?

    3. You are right. It is unlikely that people are typing the URL directly from seeing it in an ad. You said growth in "Direct leads". You mean you are actually getting conversions from them or are just seeing more "Direct" traffic? Direct traffic can often times just be spam or bots.

    4. That is just webspam.

You might want to have another professional look over your analytics account with you. I get the feeling that you suspect the "SEO guy" is not really doing you any favors. It would be good to get confirmation of that one way or the other so you know if you are throwing money down the drain or not.

    I'm with Mike on answers #1, #2 and #4.

My question about #3 is whether you have a dedicated SSL or if you are using a shared SSL. If it a shared SSL on only the parts of the site where information is entered and the leads page is on that shared SSL, everything will show up as direct, regardless of where it really comes from, because the HTTP portion of the site is essentially referring over to the SSL portion of the site. That is always the problem with using shared SSLs - you can never see the referral source because all conversions show up as "direct".

If not, it is certainly possible that some people initially find out about the site on a mobile device and then re-visit it on a desktop. This is one reason that conversions from any source might actually be higher than what is reported. The tracking cookie can only show a conversion if the person continues to use the same device when they convert (which is very often not the case with eCommerce sites - many people research on phones but buy from desktops).

I paid for my SSL and i'm on a dedicated server... I believe shared SSL is free. Am I correct?

What do you mean by "leads page"?

"Where information is entered" you mean where the buyer enters data, on checkout?

GA only shows a small portion of visits as direct... other: referral, social, paid, organic

If it is a private, paid for SSL, then that is not what is causing so many to show up as "direct".

I wasn't the one who initially used the term "leads", so you would have to answer yourself what that means to you. You said you had an increase in direct "leads" and normally leads come from a page that is dedicated to collecting information that you then use to sell people things.

I was under the impression that a large portion was showing as "direct", now you say it is small. If it is small, I'll go back to my original "otherwise" conclusion that a certain portion are from cross-device users.

Here, I think his meaning for leads page is the page which is selling page or say call to action page which is responsible for sales.

Yes, here 'Where information is entered' sounds like where buyers will enter their confidentials information.
