I'm not sure I understand Page Rank

I recently found a website ranking high on Google for a somewhat competitive keyword.

The domain is less than a year old, has only two pages on it and less than 10 backlinks, but it has a Page Rank of 4!

How is this possible? I thought PR was primarily based on the number of backlinks...

Can anyone explain this to me? :confused:

    Yes, PR is more of backlinks. I have a 30-page website with a few backlinks and 0 pr. I have a 2-page website yet has lots and lots of website, it has pr 3. Maybe the backlinks are not yet identified by the tool you used...it could take some time but it sure needs lots and lots of backlinks.

    Are you looking at Google's backlink count or Yahoo's site explorer? If its Google's then this would have something to do with it because the count isn't realistic.

    The number of backlinks certainly plays a role, but Google also evaluates carefully the quality and relevancy of those links... i also do believe that it is not about backlinks, there are some other factors that affect Pr like the quality of the content
