Hiring an SEO company or do it myself? Tips on choosing a company?

Hello there,

I'd like to promote my business on a national level. I've considered hiring an SEO company however I have a hard time on deciding who is the right choice (I've heard many 'tricks' are being used that can get my website banned from Google). How do I decide which company is the right fit and what budget is recommended to start with?

I already know that it takes around 3 months to see effective results. I am active in a small European country so maybe that's a good thing?

I've been talking to a lot of companies before and it seems that the budget ranges from 300 to 5000 USD per month. Some of these guys have explained to me that they have access to unique software to track trends etc... It's just very confusing to me as I think 5000 USD per month is a bit too much....

On the other hand some internet advertisements are promoting some easy and practical DIY software to their belief. The price for this software is often a one-time-fee or an annual fee which is peanuts in comparison to the fees of a company. It's all very confusing to me. Is it really all about the content on my website? I will have great content on my website but I won't be changing keywords every week just to stay competitive with new players.

Is running a Facebook campaign for my website a better idea? Please help

If you are looking to rank in a small European country 5,000 is way to high. Cost should be based on the level of competition.

Secondly no matter how many people lie to you software will not safely rank your site. If you have a long term business software based SEO is pointless at best and dangerous at worst.

There are far more sharks swimming in the SEO waters than there are friendly fish and they will eat you alive, possibly destroying the website's rankings, if you don't choose wisely. I KNOW that automated software is not the solution, however.

You should learn how to do it yourself if for no other reason than knowing what good SEO practices are and what are bad SEO practices. Once you know how to do SEO properly, you can ask intelligent questions of the companies you are considering hiring.

Seo is not an easy job, you need to understand that. Most of the Seo companies do many fake promises and deliver nothing in return, So you should do a thorough check before handing over your money and site to someone.Make sure you check the testimonial and be 100% sure that they are true and also don't forget to ask for 3-5 samples of their previous job..

    Hi Jimmy,

    Be careful of marketing myopia.

We see lots of posts on this forum where people have spent months, or even years, chasing the dream of getting rich by doing SEO, as if getting a #1 ranking on a the right keyword will cause their bank accounts to overflow with cash. Getting a good ranking is useless if it isn't the right keywords, combined with the right offer, on a conversion optimized landing page and/or website. SEO is just a tool, a tactic, that has no value outside of a strategy within a well executed marketing plan.

SEO is something we do to our content. These days it is most often used as part of a content marketing strategy within a an SEM marketing (organic) campaign. While you can focus on SEO as your only tool, in an SEM campaign, and organic SEM as the only channel that you use for marketing, it might not be the wisest path to follow these days.

Most of your top competitors are likely to be using a multi-channel, multi-touch marketing approach. You might be at a distinct disadvantage if you choose only one segment, of one marketing channel and never consider more integrated marketing approach. There is a lot of potential synergy that can be derived from a multi-channel approach.

The point is that SEO is just a tool, a single tactic, not a marketing plan, not even a complete strategy, at best it is just part of a strategy, which should be just part of a marketing plan.

I suggest that you formulate a marketing plan, that utilizes a strategy, and if the SEO fits that strategy (likely that it will), then incorporate it into the plan. Just make sure that you have an overall plan, with specific goals, objectives, and timelines. It doesn't need to be perfect, but you are likely to get far more out of your SEO tactics if it is part of a marketing plan.

Don' Let The Tail Wag The Dog

The SEO tactics you employ need to move you towards your marketing goals, else they are likely a wasted effort. When you go to an SEO agency, they may often divert your attention away from your goals and try to get you focused on a less meaningful goal, one that they can more easily achieve, but might not benefit you as much as required by your marketing plan.

The point is don't let the SEO agency set your goals. Don't choose an SEO objective as a marketing goal. Don't let something like rankings become your marketing goal. Choose a goal that represents real bankable value, then set objectives that realistically lead to those goals being achieved. You cannot deposit a #1 ranking into a bank account, it is just a tool that could potentially be used for gaining something of value,

    What Is Your Revenue Model?

You need a clear revenue model, and your marketing plan, strategy, and tactics, all need to fit that revenue model. Be careful that you do not end up chasing an SEO plan that targets low commercial intent (information seeking) keywords that generates a lot of non-converting traffic. It might be exciting to see those top rankings, and all that traffic, however at the end of the day you need revenue to sustain a business and lots of low-value traffic is not going to help you make a profit.

SEO is really only valuable as part of a well conceived, and well executed marketing plan. Start there, then add SEO as apart of that plan and make sure that any agency that you work with understands your marketing goals and is willing to perform according to "your" marketing goals that are based on real bankable value.

Same goes for Facebook ads, or any other marketing channel that you employ in your marketing strategy. FB can work well for certain type of businesses, but not necessarily all types of business work well on FB, It varies by business type, so test and let the results of your marketing data answer that question.

It's not just one thing you need, it is a system of tactics, tools, and strategies, that when combined become your business model.

To use an analogy: SEO is just a tool to a marketer, like a hammer is a tool to a carpenter.

To a hammer, everything looks like a nail, to an SEO specialist, everything looks like a #1 SERP ranking. If you want to build a house, you are going to need more than just a hammer, more than just a carpenter, you'll need a saw, a tape measure, a level, and other tools. and most importantly, you will need a set of blueprints to build a nice house.

Likewise to build a business online, you need more than just SEO, you will need other tools, like conversion optimized landing pages and especially a marketing plan that includes a revenue model, goals, a strategy to reach those goals, and tactics to execute that strategy.

If you have substantial competitors you will likely need a sophisticated marketing funnel, sales funnel, marketing analytics, and other essential tools. Don't get stuck on the idea that SEO is the only tool in your toolbox, or that you can build something of great value with just a single tool.

Don't think you can get by with merely an SEO automation software, or a link building package. Search engines today are far to clever to allow an SEO software program, or spammy link building packages, to dominate the top SERPs. You need to build something that offers real value and promote it in a responsible fashion. SEo can and probably should be one of those tools just come with a full tool set and a solid plan.

    HTH,

    Don Burk

Once you hire an efficient SEO company you just need to focus on your business requirements and not on how to drive traffic. Search Engine Optimization Companies greatly help in driving traffic to your site. However it is important to ensure that the SEO company you are hiring performs the following tasks well:

-Focuses solely on driving traffic to your website
    -Ensures your content is relevant
-Create plans of action parallel to your target audience
-Constantly monitor's your site and makes changes in keywords as required
-Make changes in ads, content and other marketing techniques to ensure your site matches the industry norms and is up to date.
