Do we need to interlink "Homepage" to the highest?

Hi all,
So, beside having an idea of how many links are internally pointing to important pages, we can see the number in search console. I can see now our website homepage is not at top 5 pages heavily interlinked. Other pages are interlinked higher than homepage from different subdomains too. Now my question is, Does homepage need to be highly interlinked when we target it to rank for our "primary keyword"? Btw...our login page even showing up for our primary keyword, so I doubt if it's an internal linking issue.
