Website in #1 but only 3 searches/day even though searches is 178

I have a particular website in the hosting niche. I am at #1 for the broad match search and #1 for the phrase match search.

My main keyword gets 178 searches, traffic of 74 and competition of 76,500. However when I look at my google analytics page I seem to be only getting somedays 3 searches somedays 0 searches. How come this is happening? Is there any logical explanation for this?

Yes, the search estimates from Google aren't that reliable. Also when you are checking on search volume in the Google Keyword tool, make sure you select exact match.

I can't tell by your post if you were refering to this, but analytics doesn't show you how many searches there were - just how much traffic you GOT from searches.

Also, something to be VERY carefull about: google personalizes search results. They will show you your site ranking higher then it really is. this is why I always make sure to use a third party site/tool for checking this.

Also, mpruben pointed out an important item: you need to use exact match with the google tool to see how many searches that term gets. Remember - it's a tool for adwords advertisers, and their perspective is a bit different (their use of exact match, etc, has nothing to do with the searcher using quotes, etc ).

Could it be that the particular search gets around 178 searches per month?

You might be getting duped by google custom search results.

This happened to me early on. If you are running the Google Toolbar and are logged into your google account (which most people are as they go about their day) and you are "checking your rankings" by typing in your search term into google, you can get conned into thinking you are higher than you really are!

The reason is that if you have ever run the search (while logged into your google account) and click on your own site...well Google remembers this. It thinks that the site you clicked on is "important to you" so when you run the search in the future it will show your own site as #1.

Sometimes it takes you clicking on your own site a few times from Search Result pages before it gets a "fake promotion" to your own personal #1, but if you ever click the little "vote" button on your site it will ALWAYS show as #1 from that point forward.

This is obviously a bad thing because you think everyone sees you as #1 when really you might be on page #3.

The ways to check and see your true ranking for your keyword term is to log out of your google account, clear your cash/cookies and then run the search again.

...or use Market Samurai's rank checker.

If you are sure about your stats, one reason might be that your title and description in the SERPS are not enticing people to click.

Ranking well is only part of the equation. Look at your SERPS title and description as a mini copywriting project

install another browser to do your keyword search to verify that you are on top.

Usually, i use at least 2 internet browsers (chrome and firefox, sometimes internet explorer) too, to verify the results.

Don't be surprised if you see different results.

Having checked actual Adwords data with the keyword tool's numbers, I can tell you they are very accurate.

Couple things here. As Jason said, you got 3 visits. You have no idea how many searches for that keyword (assuming all your visitors used your keywords) there was that day. There may have been only 50.

3/178 is a 1.7% click rate, again assuming there was 178 searches. Not great, especially in first. So your title and description may not be attractive.

Wait a month. 178 per day sounds like an average. Over a longer period, you'll have a better idea of the search estimate, in your case 5340 per month. Tell us your number of clicks then. Check your logs for the actual search queries used. You may be surprised what you find.

You need to remember as well that the numbers you are given (whether using Google Keyword Tool or Market Samurai) is that the figures are an average.

If your keyword is "Snowblower" and it is averaging 1,000 searches p/day you can assume that the majority of those searches are going to come between November and March. Maybe 3,000+ searches p/day during those months and a trickle of 25 searches p/day during April through October.

I'm seeing this painful effect on one of my own sites.

And you forget that the Field of Dreams Strategy is not always true.

"If you are number one, they will click."

Let me ask everyone a question. When you search, how many #1
        entries do you click on?

        As someone stated above...
You may try changing your description. Has nothing to do with SERP,
but it may be a reason fewer are clicking.

Obviously you have done something right so far.
