Three types of meta tags are there,
    1. Meta Title: Meta title is the text, which is shown on the top of the browser. Generally it take 50-60 characters, you can user more characters but Google will truncate it.
    2. Meta description: A short description about web page, shown in SERP, it takes upto 160 characters.
    3. Meta Keyword: Sets of keywords related to that page, Google has stopped importance to it as people had stated to do keyword stuffing by putting too many keywords.

Major search engines stopped using meta keyword tags a decade ago.

The only true "meta" tag you might need is the meta description. The title tag is not technically a meta tag but it is often considered one.

Title tags and meta description tags do not go by character count. Google uses the number of pixels they take up. The best tool for seeing if yours fits is this one - Title & Meta Description Visibility Tool.

So true dave. Title and Meta Description are counted by pixel size they take. I think Canonical is one meta tag which is very useful in SEO to optimize your website for SEO.

Meta descriptions can be any length, but search engines generally truncate snippets longer than 160 characters.

There are four major types of Meta tags:
1.Meta Keyword Tag: Meta keyword tags may have been beneficial, but not anymore. Meta keywords - No more than 10 keyword phrases.
2.Meta Title Tag: Meta Title is displayed on search engine results pages (SERPs) as the clickable headline for a given result. Character limit of meta title in between 0-70 characters.
3.Meta Description Tag: Meta Description will appear under your page's URL in the result that summarizes a page's content. Character limit of meta description in between 0 -160 characters.
    4.Meta Robots Tag
I.Index/no index: It tells a search engine whether to show your page in a search result or not.
II.Follow/Nofollow: It tells a search engine whether to follow a link on this page or not.

    1. Title Tag: <title>The title of the Page</title> (Unique title for your page)
Limit: Google typically displays the first 50-60 characters of a title tag, or as many characters as will fit into a 512-pixel display.

    2. Description Tag: <meta name = "Description" Content="Description of the Page">
    Limit: Roughly 155 Characters

    3. Keyword Tag: <meta name="Keyword" Content="Your Keywords">

According to Google they didn't look at meta keywords then you will be surprised that why I am mentioning it here. It is here because 'Yahoo' search still use these in their SERP. So don't miss it because still have 28% search share so why miss these 28%.

    4. Robots Tag: <meta name="robots" Content="......, ......">
The valid values for Robots Meta Tags 'Content' attribute are: "INDEX", "NOINDEX", "FOLLOW", "NOFOLLOW".
    Examples are:
    META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, FOLLOW"
    META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="INDEX, NOFOLLOW"
    META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW"
    META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOARCHIVE"
    META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOSNIPPET"
NOINDEX - prevents the page from being included in the index.
NOFOLLOW - prevents Googlebot from following any links on the page. (Note that this is different from the link-level NOFOLLOW attribute, which prevents Googlebot from following an individual link.)
NOARCHIVE - prevents a cached copy of this page from being available in the search results.
NOSNIPPET - prevents a description from appearing below the page in the search results, as well as prevents caching of the page.
NOODP - blocks the Open Directory Project description of the page from being used in the description that appears below the page in the search results.
NONE - equivalent to "NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW".
