Does a dedicated IP help you rank better?

After upgrading to a dedicated IP plan today with my webhost I picked up a snippet on the net that claimed that websites with dedicated IPs do slightly better in Google than those with a shared IP (which are most hosting plans below $9.99). Is that a myth or has anyone here actually experienced or saw evidence for that? If its true, hooray for me as this wasn't actually the reason for me to upgrade. If not, oh well!

I guess it's more fair to say that if you've got websites that are based on different I.P addresses, spread out so to say, you'll do better. Then again, i've got a bunch of sites on one server that rank well for their keywords...then again they do NOT link to each other. And that's where I heard that the devaluing of the linking comes into play. Same host interlinking.

Years ago it was true that a website on a dedicated IP address did better than websites on shared hosting.

But nowdays, the vast majority of sites are on shared hosting, plus there are not enough IP address to go around for every website. So now the search engines don't seem to place that much empahasis on dedicated IP addresses anymore.

      Hope that helps
