So a good tactic to get backlinks to your money website is to create web 2.0's, I understand that part. But are you not then in the same position trying to get that ranked by google so that people can see it as you would be your main website?

most web 2.0s are next to worthless on their own.

I guess people will continue to stick with what worked years ago but don't anymore....not in any competitive serp.

Web 2.0 is definitely not the biggest factor in a site ranking! Maybe 5 years ago. Keyword research and good content are/will always be extremely important.

Web 2.0 backlink is really powerful. Most the web 2.0 sites are high authority sites.
But at present, this backlink is not highly recommended. Many SEO experts think web 2.0 is already dead.
But I think it is still helpful to take your business to very next level. Creating quality and the unique article you can promote your blog, website, and products. You can add the link to your main website or affiliate products.
Here ranking is not a big issue but you can promote your site with a link from high authority source. It may increase your overall SEO score.
    Thanks.

It's not a link from a high authority source. Web 2.0's have almost no editorial direction or moderation. Anyone can post just about anything they want.

Plus the links are on brand new pages with zero authority themselves.

You are confused but not the first person to be confused on that.

web 2.0s have some high authority pages but that does not mean that if you get a page far away and unlinked from their authority pages you have a link on a high authority page.

If you live in washington D.C you do not have authority just because your house is located in the same city as the congress or the white house. Unless you have some real connection to positions of authority (rather than just have space in the same city) you have no authority.

getting a link buried far away under Yahoo.com because you made a comment doesn't make it an authority link. In the same way working in the basement of Microsoft as a janitor doesn't mean you have Bill gates authority because his office is in the same building.

That's a pretty good analogy. You find that somewhere or come up with that yourself?

It is not effective anymore. Same with social bookmarking, directory submission, article submission etc. Well, for SEO link building techniques there are only few left.

Thank you for the replies, I thought it was a silly question but could not get my head around it! Makes sense now. Still massively struggling to get our main website ranked without paying huge money to google ads. Any recommendations would be hugely appreciated.
    Thank you again

I never suggest you to do web 2.o because it is a subdomain. Subdomains never have a benefit of domain. Google treat them as a different domain.
I will suggest to go for subdirectories. It gains the benefits of high authority domain.
Digital Screaming explained it in very deeply. You can read it. I am sharing the link

Friend, You know Google updates their algorithm regularly. So all the SEO techniques do not work best all the time.
Some SEO techniques have already died. So you must focus on other Google recommended ranking issues.
Web 2.0 site is not very much important at this moment. It is not an important ranking factor.
In my opinion, it will be better for you if you focus on increasing your trust level and authority.
Let people know who you are? Try to be an active online user. Provide something valuable for the users. Increase online presence.
Create high-quality content, do on page SEO perfectly. Join forum sites and question and answers sites, do blog commenting, guest posting can be your best choice. Try to get organic backlinks.
    Thanks, Mytechgoal.

This is the one of best and effective way to get quality backlinks. Web 2.0 submission helps to create page rank and increase visibility of website search engine result page. It is one of the OFF page SEO techniques.
