Hi all,
If I'm not wrong, even if your content is really high quality, it'll take forever for you to be ranked highly by google, especially for non-niche areas? I'm trying to build some common sites like a mobile app, but there are already so many people with good quality content and employing backlink tactics and all.

        Well if you have authority links then you can rank any site from which I have seen.

    You need good content, lots of it, and you need to do it better than your competitors. That's the fastest way to ranking well. It won't take forever...but 1-2 years is realistic. Or you can do what some beginners do which is target super long-tail keywords that may or may not go out of trend.

      the misconception is that you need lots of content, and that is a false misconception. the real power is not the content itself, but it is very helpful if you have content that is formatted in a professional manner.

      I have read a number of case studies where people started a site with 10-20 articles, then started link building, then started making money as time went on; authority links is where the real power is; so if you want to wait til you posted your 500th article, then you are just going to have a lot of low ranking content...

      do not build more content then you can build authority links too, otherwise, your unlinked content will just sit idle doing nothing....

      so if you have 500 articles, and no visitors, then what is the point? Only when that content gets ranked, then it is seen by visitors, and if you are lucky, those visitors go to other parts of your site; Most of your link juice will hit the content directly, and if you have your site setup correctly, then some juice will spread to other content, ie: on page seo.

      and yes 1-2 years sounds about right...

        Time for part 2: get backlinks.

        Onpage SEO only takes you so far. (As in, you show in the SERPs, somewhere at the bottom of page 24 for harder keywords, somewhere on page 4 for easier ones. Yes, yes, you show up #1 for keywords nobody but you and your friends are looking for.)

        You need backlinks. The social can work, if you're in a field where those looking own a site and are looking for content that's useful for their visitors. And if they're in a good mood. And if they have the time. And if they're facing SouthEast when they come across your stuff. Otherwise, it's good for direct traffic... or for nothing as in, you get no traffic or you get direct traffic that doesn't convert.

        Pick one or more main keywords, a few supporting ones, and get some backlinks to boost them.

        (All this because I noticed you said you used to believe the create-content-and-they-will-come mantra but did not specify whether you moved on to the create-content-create-backlinks mantra.)

    Backlinks are the #1 ranking factor. Content is far less important than links.

    As I have said here 100 times, you can rank crappy content with great links, you cannot rank great content with crappy links.

          Well....for those wondering, I managed to do it. Was able to outrank more established sites all linking to each other simply because I had way better content...and also probably the traffic to reflect that.

              Unfortunately for my point...the site is already now currently the #1 dominant site in its niche (for several years now) and also has the best content AND backlinks...so I wouldn't be able to prove my point with it.

              But anyway, when I first started the site, I was behind all my competitors by at least 5 years if not more. I was new to this industry, they were already establish pros.

              I started producing better content because my goal was to have a better site, not because I wanted to outrank them. Once I started learning SEO, naturally I started trying to get backlinks from them. One said yes, the others said no. Some offered to sell me backlinks at exorbitant rates, and others would sell only banner advertising, not links. I declined being that I was just a no-budget blog and did it out of passion, not for monetization.

              So I just kept producing content and week by week, my stuff started climbing the rankings and then beating everyone else. I probably hold as many as the top 5 for some of the broad keywords, or even 5 out of the top 10 results, and even my worst-performing keywords are still on the first page. I think there was a point in time when nearly 50% of my visits were people typing in the website directly into the address bar (I share this as a measure of my content value).

              My point is anyway...it can be done. I honestly didn't expect SEO success in that manner but it happened that way inadvertently. And sorry, I can't show you the site because I like maintaining my anonymity. But you're free to dismiss my experience as false evidence if you like.

                So, you got ranked because of backlinks.

                Do a bunch of searches. Look at the page that's number 1 and compare that to pages that are showing up 57 or 38 in the SERP's. You'll often notice that those at 38 or 57 have better content or equal-quality content as the one at #1.

                  I ranked well before I got the backlinks. I know some of you guys are thinking backlinks must come before ranking. Well for this one instance, it was the other way around for me.

                  But today, it doesn't matter because I now have both the rankings AND the backlinks. If there's anything I could say that would harmonize. I was able to get only first-page rankings and first position rankings before I had backlinks. Now, I get MULTIPLE first page rankings within the same term...so I do suppose backlinks did help with that (but again, I didn't get those backlinks until after I was already ranking well).

                  If it makes any difference. I was working as an internet marketing consulting at an international PR firm back in 2010. Which also happens to be the year that my website (which was started in 2008) shot to the very top of the search engines. Now maybe nowadays rules say you can't rank well without backlinks. That may be so, but what I did at the time nearly 10 years ago worked and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again in that manner today...although it would be a tad harder with the raised SEO-awareness in today's business climate.

I have some some very unworthy crap sites that do not deserve any rankings at all, but since they have authority links, then google thinks the site is worthy, and google does not think a site to be worthy if the site has low quality backlinks, however, for best results, then your content should be the best it can be, otherwise, you may end up with an authority site with a very high bounce rate, ROFL, and what is the point of that?

        Agreed about creating useful content for traffic but that's not what this thread is about. This is an SEO sub-forum.

        Some people here actually believe Google is grading their content in order to rank pages on Google SERPs. Wrong. Google algos can't grade content based on human perception.

          fair enough, if google could grade content, then google would *not* need 100s of factors in their algorithm.

          1: good content is what keeps visitors on your site.
          2: good backlinks proves your site is trust worthy.

          1+2= good outcome....

          so good content and backlinks go hand in hand...
          but backlinks have been proven to be more powerful
          then just by having great content alone....

          Your content alone will move you up the ladder so slowly, that you will be in retirement before your content becomes effective; authority backlinks is what you need if you expect your great/poor content to be consumed by visitors....

            Blog commenting isn't the right way to build links that can get you ranked. 99% blogs provide no-follow links these days and for those who do provide do-follow links those links pass almost zero link juice.

                Blog commenting is only good for outreach and exposure. If you want to create links that makes change then do guest posting, broken link building or even you can setup a good PBN and link it back to your main site.

    Content is great. But you will need lots of it.
    and very quality content.

    see what your competitor is doing and
    take it another step, see where you can make it
    more unique and different.

    Of course SEO could help and if you take it
    one more step to promote it with adsense, solo ad (that
    belong to your niche).

    Great content are great if people stay on your website for not 10 second, and maybe share it on social media. Just check it.

    Mostly we overstimate (or understimate) our content quality: just face to reality with NUMBERS.

    Saying that, you have to build some SEO.

    Firstly did you have submit your site to the majors search engine? if not, a fiverr person can do it for u for 5 bucks.

    After that, go to BHW forum and ask some SEO whitehat service to make some seo for u. Choose the most expensive package, which indeed is more economical than most of package in the web, and outsource it.
    Take care of choosing a service with a lot of reviews.

    Than still work on what matters: your marketing. Produce content, retarget visitors who leave with facebook ads.

    Build a Facebook Fan Page and promote every post with 20 bucks. So you enforce the engagement.

      Yes , you right, seo take the time to improve your ranking or traffic. but I have a problem related to guest post, they don't approve or you have friends to offer some guest post website. but how I solve the problem related to guest post.

Only high quality content isn't enough, You need to work on many activities to generate the quality backlinks to your page. One of such is "you need to check the Domain Authority of the site on which you are going to put your links". DA more than 30 is better.

    I totally agree with you that quality content is not enough, you have more responsibilities. You have to do more and more.

            Hi Nikhil your point is noted but if your content is not appealing the user or not resolving the searchers intent what he is looking for then how would you get more traffic as it will not rank in google's top results and hence you will not get that backlinks that naturally build by users. So I think good content will automatically generate more backlinks resulting into a more traffic.

                Good content does not automatically generate backlinks. Someone has to see your good content before someone can link to your good content.

                Good content does not rank higher in Google because Google likes good content.

                Content that has more backlinks, ranks higher.

                However, there is no point in ranking (spending the effort to rank) if your content does not convert. Note: I said, if it does not convert; I did not say anything about quality.

                Because you can have good content that converts and good content that does not convert, and good content that converts a bit and all the other inbetweens.

                Google ranks the content that best matches a search. But not only in content, in backlinks too.

                So, if you write a page about Las Vegas bakeries but throw a bunch of backlinks with Miami mortgage broker, Google will rank you for Miami mortgage broker not for Las Vegas bakery.

                No matter how good your content about bakeries in Las Vegas is!

    and try Niche forums to build high authority profiles.

      Yup internal linking is good for every page.

      But I Just want to say that. Guest post is the useless part of SEO in my point of view. some website closes the guest post option . some website doesn't approve your guestpost.
      Yes, the forum post is a great way but when your niche or question provide a great hit on your audience side.

        A profile on a high DA site won't help. The DA is about the domain not the page your profile page and it's not something Google uses to rank anything.

        Get backlinks from pages that have backlinks of their own.

        Even if those backlinks are only internal backlinks.
