When researching KW's for niche site, how can you tell what KW's will be a lost battle from the start, and what KW's are worth the trouble?

Is it high domain authority for the top ranking sites for that KW? Is it a lot of backlinks for each of these sites? How can you tell if a niche is too competitive?

Well general niches like weight loss fitness ,etc are too competitive .If you want to have a change you must go more long tail like weight loss for momies under 45 yers etc its just an example

Yeah but sometimes weight loss for mommies may have results from Livestrong, Amazon and MayoClinic on the top page and it's not like you can beat any of these sites.

in this case, maybe you should find a better niche, or do a better job on researching LSI keywords you can rank for.IMO, I see such god awful amazon built sites all the time in this niche and some even with authority, they certainly do not seem to have a problem. what keyword tools are you using? maybe put more effort into keyword research, create great content, and build authority links. If I was struck down with amazon fear of ranking around every corner, shit, I would get absolutely nothing done. If you have a new site, then you certainly wont rank above amazon, as you gain more authority, then you will even rank for keywords you never thought about, this is how this works, and it happens all the time. You may be going after this keyword, then you end up ranking for others that you were not even trying to rank for...

you will be amazed what you can rank for
with some high quality links, it may take some
time, but once you get through the door....

How can you know if you will ever rank for something? For example if a competitor has 40k backlinks, I won't be able to match that.

In general, how many quality back links can you hope to build on a new website a day? 10? 20?

Here how I do the research.
First I find some keywords in a niche and run them via kwfinder or ahrefs to get a general idea which keywords are easy according to them after that.
I just run a google query in double quotes search like "keyword" and see how many results are in google if the number of results are less then its a good keyword.

After this you can do a manual search for keyword to see if any niche site or smaller website appears on page 1 or 2 if yes then you can go forward with that keyword.

      Less than what?

Also, should I go for a keyword where only youtube videos are shown?

  • It depends on how much competition is there for that particular keyword. If you have high competition on that particular keyword you can face a lot of difficulty in ranking for it.

But its a very abstract statement. What is, in numbers, high competition? Is it 5 authority sites on the SERP? Is it a high mozrank pagerank?

Everyone says "look for low competition" but I don't know, numerically wise, what low competition looks like.

Use keyword tools as well as Search Bar of Google, check competition & traffic. Avoid those keywords which are treated as terms for any business like "online shopping" only, here you can use long tail keyword and trying to figure out your keyword with time frame with less to more competition. So that you can increase your presence gradually. Lots more .... try to figure out first..

Higher DA & PA site are most comparative. Search Google with your Keyword. Open First 10 result and observe them closely.

If there is more then 3 Shopping or E eCommerce site, leave the keyword. Try to find another one.

    That's easy.
Don't use KW that have nothing to do with your site like "covfefe"
