This is a pretty informative interview with the guy at Google who is in charge of search. He says that only a few engineers at Google truly understand search. Interesting read.

    Some important points in that interview...

    If you look at all the unique queries we get in a particular day, about a third of them we've never seen before. One-third of them every day are unique. If you normalize for traffic in any random query ... still about one-sixth of the total traffic is completely new every given day.
    This why targeting a wide variety of long tail terms works well.

    We improve spell-checking somewhere, and suddenly, something completely unrelated changes.
    Google isn't necessarily out to get you when your site goes from page 1 to page 4. It may just be a butterfly flapping its wings and you get a thunderstorm.
