What Is The PROPER Way To Build Traffic?

In recent research on how to get traffic to my website, I have come across all kinds of ideas. Complete link wheels, broken link wheels, social bookmarking, article marketing, forum marketing, SEO, etc., etc., etc.

Now I am not saying there is anything wrong with most of these, but they just seem like a Chihuahua knawing at the pant leg of Google. So my question is, what is the right way to build traffic?

First off, I don't have the answer, that is why I am asking. But in thinking about it, it seems like the best way is to have such great content every day that Google just can't help but want it. Or at the least, having such great content that it goes viral and you just get tons of voluntary backlinks. But how reasonable is it that this should happen? Clearly, it won't happen to everyone and every website.

For example, if I want to create a website to sell toasters, it is going to be real hard to create original, viral content about toasters everyday. But I want traffic to my toasters site, so what do I do?

I recently read of a company that created a website with 20 pages and within 1 month, they were making $40 a day through Adsense. Now to them that might not be a lot, but I would certainly take it! I wonder how they did that? Did they have to spend thousands of dollars to get it done?

If so, are common people just relegated to adding backlinks everyday? Yeah, I know, we can outsource and use software and all of this, but in the end, is it just somebody doing manual labor to get traffic to a site? It just seems like building backlinks is almost tricking Google in itself. Or are backlinks just billboards along the Internet interstate that work together to drive traffic?

You can build fresh content pages on virtually any subject and then build links to them, just keep looking for related content/subjects.

somebody always has the latest and greatest means of generating more and better traffic... and it typically costs you $19.95

I'm a simpleton... backlinks w/ anchor text - -> my site = higher ranking = more traffic = more sales = me happy.

I'm still a simpleton... backlinks w/ anchor text 'toasters', the more the better, the higher the quality the better --> my site = higher rankings = more traffic = more sales = me happy.

Yep to all of the above.

Now, with RSS feeds and social bookmarking and automation tools you can cut a lot of corners and accomplish more with less but really, as far as I am concerned, he who controls the spice controls the universe... wait, no... he who has the best best and most backlinks with targeted keywords ranks best. I have never seen a trick or technique that trumps these simpleton ways. It's something that every webmaster has to deal with no matter how they like to spin it.

Yes, there are more tools you can add to your SEO toolbelt if you really want to dig in and get dirty with the nitty gritty of how to milk a site for all it's worth but for most sites it's window dressing.

But what do I know, I'm a simpleton.

Try to improve your website rank in organic search results from google, yahoo etc. So the only advice I can give is targeted link building from relevant quality websites.

The key to getting massive traffic to your website, is to know your audience.

What I mean by that, is you need to know who they are, what they like and dislike doing and where they hang out.

If they spend large amounts of their time online then, use all the good online suggestions mentioned above.

If not, then offline traffic generation ideas can drive obscene amounts of traffic to a website.

    Things like :
    Advertisments in newspapers/magazines/TV shows etc
    Business cards
    Letterbox flyers,
    etc etc etc

Let your mind run wild with ideas, and always remember the concept that there are far more people offline than there are online at anyone time..

It just depends on where your audience for your website is, and somehow get infront of that audience.

    Hope that helps

as being mentioned already - relevancy and knowing the audience (what they like, want, how you can piss them off) is key.

another thing is you need to have some form of 'currency' you can trade with. Be it link exchange or you pointing out broken links on their site etc etc - whatever.

1way links are getting harder and harder to get as the 'average' webmaster is becoming way too savvy for their own good

      Just my $0.05

Building traffic can be a really difficult thing to do. Myself, I've just started to step into the world of AdSense and Affiliate Marketing and it seems an enormous hurdle to overcome; actually making it to the top page of Google.

One thing that gives me confidence is that sometimes, when I'm researching random topics, I discover sites that have made it to the top that really aren't anything particularly special. They don't even seem to have all that many pageviews. And they certainly aren't websites that would have ridiculous amounts of cash to splash on paid advertising. That's what has made me come to the conclusion that it is possible for anyone with a website and enough time and skill to create good content can make it. So long as their topic is well chosen. Therein lies the problem.

A friend of mine, a specialist in affiliate marketing, once told me to think of websites in terms of pages, rather than sites. Therefore, taking the example already mentioned, your website on toasters may be struggling to make it to the top page, so perhaps instead consider one particular model of toaster and write an incredible review on it. Instead of publicising your website, publicise this webpage through article directories, newsletters, the usual. Every time a person then went to search for that particular brand of toaster, your result would reach them. Hopefully then your website would then be effective enough to hold the attention of your reader and get them thinking, 'ah, that review is just the thing I was looking for... I wonder what else might be on this website'. And so it goes on.

Obviously this isn't an answer to the question. Without limitless money growth is always going to take time, but with careful consideration as to where the majority of your effort is focused you may be able to reduce that time a little.
