Can you actually rank higher than Amazon ?

Hi guys,
This is a question i`ve thought about many times, I`ve got a product in mind that i would like to do a adsense site around, the product is a certain model of breadmaker.
When i type this model of bread maker into google theres really not much to worry me just it has amazon sat at the top in spots 1 & 2 the second spot is for the older model of course this breadmaker is being sold on amazon.
Can i ask is there anyway you can actually beat Amazon with a well optimized site without spending months on backlinking and WSO`s ??
