Hey guys, I know everybody is busy, but I could really use some advice on this one.

A lady in town just found out that I am an internet marketer and she has a business website she wants me to help promote and get ranking in the search engines.

I know a good deal about SEO but have only done it with my own websites, not someone elses. So do I don't even know where to begin with charging her.

Any suggestions on writing up a bid and how to charge for my SEO services?
Should I charge by the hour or by the task?

She doesn't have a clue about what SEO even is, so it's also a matter of writing up a bid that is understandable in laymans terms.

This can possibly be a regular thing for me and she knows how much her website needs good marketing and she is VERY interested in my services so I don't want to blow this one.

Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

Why don't you charge a commission or percentage for each sale you generate?

Or, maybe tell her that your rate is X, but, because it's her, you'll charge her Y (a lower amount) and then just a percentage of what she draws on. You could verify that by "suggesting appointments," and then, charging her Z amount per appointment set.

    Many possibilities.

Don't limit the business to local people. I am trying to help a lady get set up on embroidery, so, she can do embroidery business that I set up for her, nationwide.

Most SEO guys charge: per project / tasks. Plus a bonus if some milestones are reached (eg: top 10 in google for a specific keyword in 6 months.)

    SEO has 3 parts:
Onpage SEO. You can charge a straight fee on this.

Offpage SEO. You can charge per hour on this - but let her know in advance what you'll do and how many hours you'll put in per week.

Content generation. Many a times, without good content, offpage SEO becomes very hard. Especially for competitive keywords. So you need to figure out if she'll provide the content or if you will.

Create an entire itemized bill. That'll impress the client too - because many folks think SEO is easy to do. And it'll mean less bargaining too. If they bargain - just tell them which service from the itemized list would they like to cut...

    Hi Jonoman1, here's a slightly different approach.

Find a long tailed keyword that she ranks for but is ranked around say 50 - 100 in Google. Tell her that you will get her ranked on page one of Google for free and supply your terms for ranking other keywords (you decide the actual keywords, number of keywords, timescales, cost etc).

Get her to sign an agreement stating that she will hire you as described after you have got her ranked page 1 for the freebie.

Get her ranked for the freebie using whatever methods you use then approach her as if the deal is done. Get paid 50% upfront and 50% on completion.

Have at heart the emphasis on actually gaining new business for her.

Show her how to track her keyword rankings herself EVERY DAY.

I guarantee that if you engage her as above, you'll have no problem working out a decent win win scenario for both of you.

    Over deliver, under promise.

    Good luck

    Tony

I think it is better to estimate number of hours to be worked and charge per hour.
