Total newb question I know.... I have several sites I have made that I can't seem to get on Googles SERP. I have "submitted" the sites using webmaster tools in google, but I get the error "site not indexed". All of my sites are very simple wordpress sites or blogs in low to semi competitive markets. Google isn't even showing my sites if I type in www.mydomainname.com. What step am I missing here? I have installed the meta tag google gives you in these sites as well. All of these sites I have submitted and waited at least a week, some two or three weeks, so Google has had enough time to crawl them I would think. Thanks in advance for your help!

How long does Google typically need to crawl and index a site?

    Hi,

Google can index a site within hours or it can take months. Usually my sites are indexed within 24-48 hours. 3 days MAX.

Submitting your site to Google is NOT the way to get indexed. Sounds stupid but trust me.

As anilimb said, you need to get backlinks. If your not sure how to do this then the easiest way is to submit articles to www.ezinearticles.com. Works every time.

You can also use blogs to gain backlinks, as long as you write something of value then blog-owners won't mind you adding a backlink to your site. Best if these are content related. e.g, if your site is about "dog training" then find blogs related to "dogs" or "pets".

You can also use social bookmarking services, and as your using Wordpress you should make use of RSS. Submit your rss feeds for syndication. A quick google search will find you plenty of places to submit to.

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,
    John.

Thanks Jonboy. I having been focusing purely on getting google to index my page so I can start creating articles and backlinks. I thought if I did all of that before I was indexed I stand the chance of not getting indexed and wasting time. Great post It's good to know that I don't have to rely on Google 100% in gettting indexed.

The way to get a site indexed is to get some half decent links pointing to your site.

The sooner you do this, then the quicker your site will be indexed and start ranking..

Not so e long ago, I put together a series of blog posts on "how to get any website indexed in under 36 hours"

You can find the posts in a series of 4 at :

Get Any Website Indexed in the Search Engines in Under 36 Hours - Part 1

    I hope this helps

You already got some good advice on backlinks, so I won't add to them save to say that it is the key to getting out of the Google sandbox.

However, Alexa is a different matter. Despite having my site live for over 2 year sand being top 10 for three of my main ultra-competative keywords, Alexa still had no listing for my site. I manually added the site to Alexa and got a rating within 24 hrs and saw it fall from 20M to under 5M in 2 months

What I usually do to start a new site off and to get it indexed is, I add it to my webmaster account and Yahoo then I go to cubestat.com, aboutus.com, pingoat.com and then I do some social bookmarking using Digg, Folkd, Stumbleupon etc and then I start article submissions.

But..... 17 days ago I loaded a site, I added it to the above (but not the social bookmarking sites because it didn't have any content) but then I never got around to adding any content and when I searched the main keyword term yesterday I found the site at 5th position on page 1 of Google Crazy!
