Tool to turn affiliate links no follow?

With google confirming that your site can lose it's rankings through having affiliate links (basically it's treating them as affiliate links:Paid Links: Seller and Buyer Beware! - Search Engine Watch (SEW)) I'm going to have to go through all of my wordpres sites and ensure that the links in the banners etc are all no follow.

Is there a tool or easy cloaking plug in that people could recommend to no follow affiliate links?

  • I read about that JohnMu quote on a few different blogs. If you read it carefully again, I don't think his comment can be interpreted to mean that Google officially wants all affiliate links to be no followed.

It's possible that IS a new Google rule, but I've not seen it mentioned anywhere else and just don't think the quote below says that explicitly.
He is only saying "This doesn't seem to match your reply regarding the use of nofollow" which relates to the OP original post.

Google employee JohnMu jumped into the conversation:
"I browsed your site's reviews a bit and most of the links are either affiliate links or links to the companies without nofollow. This doesn't seem to match your reply regarding the use of nofollow. Perhaps it would be good to double-check and submit a reconsideration request should you find something that could be improved."
I don't know of a link cloaker that auto adds no follow, just thought I would comment on the above.

There must be thousands of sites out there who's affiliate links are do follow (all of mine for a start!). I can go through my sites and no follow everything, just thought there may be a plugin or a quick and easy way to do it.

Yes, but is there an easy way to turn them no follow, or do you just go through each link manually?

Just go through each link manually and then put rel=nofollow tag.

there are a few plugins that do this, you'll have to search around for them, I'm sure a search for 'wordpress nofollow plugin' will give you what you are looking for.

This really should have been your first step.

I was also trying to highlight to people that they could be seriously damaging their site's rankings because by not no following the external links from their blog, it wasn't for completely selfish reasons.

Not sure of the helpfulness of your post, but there you go.

Anyway, a plugin that allows you to no follow all the external links from you WP site: WordPress › External Links WordPress Plugins

AFLinker - wordpress affiliate link cloaker. It's free.
It generates cloaked affiliate links around keywords and keyphrases that matching your pattern. It also capable to make images clickable - which is very nice click boost as people like to click on images.

You have a choice to make them do- or nofollow. Nofollow is default.

Additionally to that you may use AFLinker as your own URL shortener service.

Plus it allows you to track every single click on every link via Google analytics.
