They haven't ditched it. Merely removed it from one of their products. They are still using pagerank.

That article is a bit annoying since they use misleading quotes:

"We've been telling people for a long time that they shouldn't focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it's the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true," says Moskwa. "We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it."

What it should have said is:

"We've been telling people for a long time that they shouldn't focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it's the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true," says Moskwa, referring to the PageRank removal from Webmaster Tools. "We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it."

And no matter how hard they try to explain to people that it isn't all that important to them for their web site, still people are confused. I didn't see once that they said that they are doing away with page rank, only that is is not being included in that tool. Yet again and again I keep seeing it stated that Google is doing away with page rank, by people commenting on it.

Yes it's confusing for a lot of people. I believe page rank matters, but when it comes to getting let's say backlinks... it's good to go for a good mix of backlinks... not just from high-PR sites. But in general I think that if a page ranks high on Google consistently, it also has a high page-rank.
