What's the difference between Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

    HI amber.ella,

There are probably a few definitions floating around for this but this is mine:

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a part of Search Engine Marketing (SEM), much like a backhand is part of tennis.

SEO is generally related to getting your website/page to rank well in the search engines for a particular keyword/phrase. This definition usually includes on-page optimisation (keywords in title tags, site structure, etc) and off-page optimisation or link building.

SEM includes ranking on search engines but is also focused on conversion. It's all very well ranking #1 for your keyword but if no one buys your product what's the point?

So SEM would include SEO but would also cover:

    - Conversion & Tracking (how many people visit, how many buy?)
    - Retention/Email Marketing
    - Social Media Marketing

    To name a few.

Like I said this is my definition. I know some people who use them interchangably to mean the same thing.

Hope that didn't confuse you too much

    Cheers,
    Ben

Both are techniques to make your site on top. The only difference is that SEM is one part of an SEO.

    my 2 cents
