Will keeping links in syndicated articles hurt my site?

Hi,

If I put articles on my site from sources such as goarticles, ezinearticles, etc. and keep the author box as I'm supposed to, it will also include links to the various authors' websites.
Can that hurt my own site in the eyes of google?
I know about 'bad neighborhoods' etc., but is there a way around this? Will nofollow do the trick?
A lot of sites use these articles (including goarticles and ezinearticles), so it can probably not be that bad, or what?

Will a bad link just have influence on the page with the link, or my whole site?

Thanks.

Regards,
Thomas

It really does depend on the site being linked to in the author box etc. - if it's a site that has been blacklisted by Google, the fact that you are linking to it will reflect badly on you. I don't think nofollow will stop that and if Google really doesn't like the site being linked to, I would think it will affect your whole site.

I can't think of a way around it other than to strip out the links from the articles completely or check that each site being linked to is still indexed/ranked by Google. I'm guessing you don't have time for that!

    Thanks, lockwood77.

An option could be just to link to the article on goarticles, right?
    For example goarticles.com/articleaboutstuff.htm?

Just to clarify, if an author's website has been penalized and it's on your website then that will not hurt you. Don't worry about that. What will actually hurt you in what you're doing is putting up these articles on your website. If this is just a site that you really don't care too much about and you are using a money drive technique then the heck with using other's articles. Now if this is a blog where you want "search engine" traffic then that will get you nowhere. Make sure the articles composed on your site are at least 80% original or plr article spinned..That way the articles can get indexed!

Yes, I would think linking to the article itself would be fine.

Just to disagree with Jeff slightly, if the site you're inadvertently linking to via the syndicated article is a "bad neighbourhood", you'll be seen as being part of that. If they link to you, so be it, you can't stop them, so Google won't penalise you, but if you link back, that's a concious decision and implicates you in the whole setup (even if it's an accident).

Jeff's point is about duplicate content - if your content is too similar to that on another site and the other site has greater authority, your pages won't rank, although Google have made it clear that they're not actually penalising your site, just making sure users get unique content with each click on a search result.

I was thinking about rewriting the articles a bit (with translation tools). That should probably do the job.

    Thanks for your input.
