Finally made it to no.1 position in Google after 8 years!

My first site "Wong's Virology" has finally made it to the first result of Google for the term "virology" after 8 years. This is a very proud moment for me as I never imagined that my site would be ranked high than Wikipedia, virology.net and various virology journals for that term. It had been flipping between first and second places and so it may not last long.
There is absolutely no secret in terms of promotion. I last promoted the site 8 years ago by submitted it to the Yahoo, ODP, and Looksmart directories, and also exchanged links with 2 important virology sites.
There are few backlinks listed in Google to the homepage but what has been happening is that people have been linking to the inner pages of my site, some of which were from Wikipedia.
The site was never intended for the layman and I never intended to make money from it. But I am proud to have provided a teaching resource to thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students worldwide. At the same time, I feel ashamed that I had hardly updated yet. It is still waiting for a section on swine flu.
I think the lesson is that if you have got good quality original content, natural backlinks would come readily and you do not really need to promote your site this much.
