Hello, can someone point me in the direction of an explanation of how to build a strong link-wheel?

I know I'll not answer your question, I don't do this kind of stuff.
Why people always try to trick the system?
You shoud build your business on solid foundations... not on it-will-work-for-one-month ninja tricks.

Thank you, I was wondering if this worked any better than simply building back-links.

Linkwheels worked. Let me emphasize that "worked".
Since it's implementation Google has caught on.

You'll need to adapt your linking for it to be fully effective again.

That's the problem with these things. Someone discovers what works, then publishes a course about it. People read that course and start posting the secrets on blogs and stuff. Before you know it the local janitor has a link wheel for his pet rock site and it no longer works.

You have to admit though, his pet rock site is pretty cool. Joking aside, I agree, for link wheels to be effective, you need to, for lack of better words, "re-invent the wheel"

In the mean time, check out the janitor's "pet rock of the week"....

Totally agree - once it gets mainstream it doesn't work well anymore, but I think thats just the way it goes..
Google gets more and more sophisticated and so does the SEO methods.. A fun challenge..

Sorry Totally Disagreed. Link wheel method is still effective today this tactic was explored by other SEO's then implement and prove that its the part of quality link building process as the results the page rank up. Of course SEO posting it because of the benefits that they have gained. In addition to this its not the specific method but on how you implement this strategy with quality and well organized. hope this helps.

I was wondering if we have any concrete evidence that link wheels are busted already?

    Just curious..

I wonder too. I keep hearing that in random posts. I don't know if its an opinion or based on testing.

From what I have learned over the past few months - link wheels used to be circular as in 'closed link wheels'. Some reported them as being less effective than they used to be.
More recently they are recommended to be open and some call this open or horseshoe link wheels.

I guess the best thing to do is to test it. I create web 2.0 sites everyday but I haven't really tried creating lets say a 20 spokes wheel focused on a single anchor text linking to a single site.. hmm if I find the time later I'll do a quick one on a dummy site and see if it ranks in the serps..

    Thanks,

    Omar

Linkwheels definitely still work -- you just have to be a bit more creative in how you implement it, and try not to use the same old sites in linkwheels (ie. the "textbook" list of linkwheel sites)

    Here is what I do:
    1. I write my linking sites under a pen name.
    2. I build the linking site naturally and link to my own site(s) as well as other top quality sites that do not directly compete with me. Build a Hub, squidoo or blog, etc. that is more broad in scope than the niche I am promoting. It then promotes my site and links to some others in the broad niche but not my narrow niche. (Gives me a more natural link.)
    3. I do not interlink the sites, unless it is natural to do so.
    4. Mostly, I like EZA over all other linking strategies.
