Create ten blogs with my top ten keywords as the title then post articles and blog comments with backlinks to my website?

Like every keyword in the article would be a hyperlink back to my main sales page on that keyword.

Is there a downside to that strategy ?

That wouldn't be a good idea. The downside would probably be a banning by Google.

If its really that easy to get banned by google wouldn't my competitors that are some of the sleaziest people on Earth be doing it to me?

It is the fact that you own the blogs that are spamming the site you also own.

If someone else wants to create blogs and link to you, power to them.

Also, don't think you can out-smart Google by trying to hide who is running the blogs...they are pretty sly in such things.

          Banned
Just wondering here if automatic link exchange would have me banned from google?
          Any idea Steveweber?

Possibly not banned (but who knows for sure), but I'd say it's likely the links would be devalued (eventually at least).

Google has some sophisticated tools to search for stuff like this. Automation nearly always leaves footprints.

Remember Google owns the search engine results, and they have the ability to query the data in ways we don't to find out stuff like this.

If it's a throw away domain, there is probably nothing to lose by trying it. Personally I wouldn't risk it, but of course it's your decision.

            Been there, done that

            Cheers

Google certainly will not ban you I do not think, but back links are not as simple as being a quantity game as has been proven time and time again.

Mass back links appear to be 'devalued' and rendered useless. In this manner, your competitors will be unable to screw you over by mass back linking to you, but likewise you will not gain much permanent advantage by mass back linking to yourself in turn.

Of course, this is all just based on various experiments that have been carried out with back links. Still, the overwhelming majority of results seem to suggest that a rating system does exist.

Beware if you think Google won't ban you for making doorway pages like that.

Read here on Google's site what they say about doorway pages:

Notice how Google worded it as: "Google may take action on doorway sites and other sites making use of these deceptive practice, including removing these sites from the Google index."

While I have no insider knowledge of Google, it would still seem to be a pretty odds-on guess that while they would probably ban the doorway sites, they would be a lot less hasty about acting against sites that seemingly benefit. As the original poster pointed out, it would be an excellent way to get rid of rivals were that the case (and who knows, if I am wrong then perhaps it is an excellent way to get rid of rivals).

Of course, if Google has reason to be absolutely certain that one person was manipulating search results in that manner then they would have no reason not to ban them.

Steve, you're wrong man. Google is not going to ban you.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in creating loads of blogs, ie, one at blogspot, live journal, wordpress, etc, etc and so on, create an article on each with desired keywords and write an article once a week on each of them, then head over to social bookmarking sites and book mark each of those free blog post articles.

Then create loads of squidoo pages and link them to your social bookmarking urls that you previously did, create more articles for your blogs and link your blog articles to your squidoo pages only, leave out your main website link, reason being if any of the free blog accounts notice a huge influx of the same links in X amount of posts they will disable your account, not all do this mind you, but most do, especially blogspot and wordpress.

Then head over to hubpages and create loads of those, link up your blogs, social bookmarking sites, squidoo pages, and your own website to those articles you create on hub pages...

then head over to craigs list and make one post for each of the links you did above.

then head over to yahoo answers, create about 5 usernames, each asking a question, then next week, go back and create 10 more usernames, or as many as you like, and answer each of them and present a link to each of the sources you just made earlier.

then head over to yahoogroups and join loads of them, like 1000 or so, submit your links above, and within about 2-4 hours, you'll have about 100 back links, and over time, you'll have about 3000 backlinks pointing to each of those links above, how? people use rss feeds for their blogspot and other sites that come off yahoogroups.

then create a video, or lots of them and submit them out to loads of video sites.

    Job done.
    repeat and spin.

of course, you could use article directories too. and forums. and guest books, and free classified ads, press releases, the list goes on.
