Need Wordpress Advice Page or Post For Adsense

I have been using wordpress for some time, but never checked my results in google that much. Silly me. Now I have been building some adsense sites and noticed something. I always make my first entry a post. Then I usually make the rest of my content pages.

When I checked a few of my sites today in google with site:domainname I found that it indexes the post as the domain name, and also as the name of the post.

So if my domain name is nicekitchenlamp.com and I make a post, "how to find a nice kitchen lamp" it will show both.

When you go to site:nicekitchenlamp.com it will show

nicekitchenlamp.com
nicekitchenlamp.com/how-to-find-a-nice-kitchen-lamp

I can't put the www because this forum will turn them into links, but they are both clickable, and both pages will show up, With The Same Content, because they are in-fact the same page. I can't believe that is good.

Should I start making my first entry a page, and then make the rest posts?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    I ran into this issue when developing the WordPress version of the xFactor style template.

    What is happening, at least what was happening for me, was that the home page post resolves to both locations as you've indicated and if your template lists all posts, its going to list that post in the menu system.

    So the Google bot is going to first hit your home page and crawl the post content there, then its going to follow that link "how-to-find-a-nice-kitchen-lamp" and its going to index that as a separate page (but with the same duplicate content as your home page).

    The way to avoid this, at least the way I've implemented it in the template, is to make the home page post STICKY and then recode your nav lists so that they do not list the sticky home page post.

    PM me if you need help with this... There's probably multiple ways of achieving the same end result...

    jgd.. you can fix this with the free All-in-one SEO Wordpress plugin. There is no meta-description for your page so google picks up content from your main page to use as a description. If you add a meta-description then google typically will use it to describe your page. The easiest way to implement this is to get the All-in-one SEO plugin. Just search in google and you'll find it.

    I just set the first entry up as a page then set it to "static page" in the "readings setting". The rest of the content can be set up as posts or pages... (I generally use posts as I get more functionality that way with tags etc.).
