Thanks to RankBrain, Google is probably going to be less and less dependent on backlinks for ranking decisions.

The best 'tool' I can suggest is the concept of COMPETITOR REVERSE ENGINEERING - do this after you find less competitive keywords in your niche.

Lock those in then scale up.

In many forum, I have heard people claim that Spyfu is a top notch tool . It is effective and will give you accurate details. I can see from your response that you have used it. Please shed more light on it.

The market is full of free tools. Most of them come with limited features. To my experience, the paid one got the real functionality for example "Ahref" is one of the best tools for finding any SEO expert sought after.
