I am not sure wether the whole backlink process I have been doing for the last couple of weeks has been a waste of time.

I am mainly using articles to drive people to a site at the moment.

So I was bookmarking the articles with the big players, but just posting the URL and a description like "a great atrticle for thoses struggling with xxxxx" but NO anchor text in the description.

I also submitted the site and inner pages to directories and bookmarks but again, just url no anchor text. I used the keyword im targeting in the text description but not anchored.

Then with blog commenting, I would insert my url as requested, and that would be clickable when my comment hits but again I just make an on topic comment with no anchor.

After doing some reading I am now concerned that all these links I have built aren't going to help me much as I havent anchored my keyword.

Am I right or wrong?

I understand the process of linking and where to get them but I am just not sure I understand the proper way to use anchor or even if I need to in certain cases.

Incidentally only 7 links show to my domain at the moment. After what must be a good few hundred bookmarks, directories, and articles etc I thought a few more links might have been showing somewhere.

Could someone clear this up for me before I go trying any more linking.

    Hi

I do mostly article marketing to promote my sites. Been doing it for several years. I don't bother using anchor text at all. My main reason for not bothering is that:

    1) It may work for some articles, but not necessarily for all.

    2) I write quality articles that tend to get picked up by other publishers. I always put my plain ole html URL link in the sig line, because I want to be sure that the person using my article on their site makes it go live.

I see some only using anchor text in their sig line, which is what is being advised a lot now, and this is okay if your article just sits in a directory. But, if someone decides to use it, then there's no guarantee that they'll bother to make those anchor links live. And that means you get NO link juice or traffic for your hard work.

Okay, now you've got to just be patient and not expect to see results quickly with this method. Organic links take time to build, but do give you good to great results if you keep putting your link out there. So, in my opinion, you're not wasting your time.

Don't sweat the anchor link thing. Use it or don't use it. It may enhance your article ranking or not as far as I'm concerned. Others may disagree.

All I know is that putting an html link in the signature box always gets me traffic and link juice.
