What do you consider a competitive niche?

Hi Guys

I see people all the time saying 'and this is for a tricky keyword' and other words to that effect but what is a competitive keyword?

Would you say a keyword that gets 33k searchs monht is competitive?

Does it not matter too much about the search volume but more about how many links the competitors have?

Does the 'amount' of links a competitor have not matter so much as to what anchor text is used?

A little help would be great on this subject.

Yup my site is competing against 800 million for some of my keywords. I'd say that's fairly competitive.

Thanks for the replies, did think I was going to get any for a while.

Let me give you a few examples:

What if for keyword (1) the competition on page 1 google has between 200-50 links each?

Keyword (2) has sites with 100-10 links each?

Would you consider those keywords to be something you could compete with fairly easily?

I understand it will depend on how they are using their anchor text within those links but if you were looking at a niche and the competition for your 2 highest keywords looked similar to those I have just metioned, would you think it was worth having a go?

i would say anything above 5,000,000 searches using the " " for your keyword is very competitive, then its just a matter of analysing each site on the page 1 of google checking (page rank, authority of those sites). If you find forums, yahoo answers or article sites showing up on page 1 then you will very easily beat them if they are you competition from past experience

I think a competitive niche is relative to the person in that niche. For instance, some people would say the online dating niche is very competive. Well it's competitive if you use the same keywords as everyone else which most people do.

I don't view niches as competitive because I try to think outside the box. Going to give an example using the dating niche. Most people will use broad keyword terms that make the niche competitive because everyone else is going to use those same keywords. If you laser point your target market you have a better chance of being the only one marketing to them. For online dating I would target computer programmers that are on the computer a lot. Don't get out much but would love to go on dates. Almost all programmers are single. Some are introverts when it comes to meeting women offline so meeting online would be perfect for them. I would go after the non-convential sites where they frequent the most like programming forums, social networks, etc. This is how you can make a competitve niche non-competitive. Understand who your target is and expand out your broad keyword terms to a more narrower focus.

Hope this helps you see a different point of view
