Google Is Driving Me Crazy?!?!?

This last week Google has been driving me nuts lately. For the keyword phrase make money online my blog has been on page 3 of Google, page 1 of Google, and now page 13 of Google. Just yesterday it moved back to page 1, and than it jumped back. To verify I even had several people check my ranking out across the country and they all got me on the first page. Obviously I was pumped, but figured that I still had more work to do to achieve the top spot. It just motivates me to build more links. Does anyone else have a similar story with keywords they are going after.

I know this happens often when achieving rankings in Google. It has happened many times for my clients and myself, and most of the time it results in a move back to page 1 or page 2, so I am not too worried.

I just thought people would find it interesting. I would be interested in hearing stories from others with similar stories.

It's normal mate, just keep getting links, you gotta remember there are tons of pages that have that phrase in their pages added to google's search network daily, google has to go through each of those links and analyze them, and rank them accordingly... keep doing what you're doing and it will become stable.

Mine are stable, other than the odd jump up and down every now and then, but gradually get higher.

Now, what you may not be doing, which a lot of people probably aren't doing, is concentrating on making the pages they get links from turn into authority pages, this is one of the main mistakes people make. It's not just about getting links to your site, it's also about building the authoritative nature of those links you get, if it's a new page like a hubpage, squidoo lenses or a free wordpress blog page, each in turn need to be built up just as your normal websites backlinks.

I'm surprised even the so-called guru's Brad Fallon, Andy Jenkins don't tell you this in their lame STSE2. Which I thought was total crap and a major let down. And Jerry West, hasn't got a clue what he's talking about, I've already broken a few of his myths that he passes off as gospel truth who Dan Theis told him about.

The main thing what they don't tell you about is, creating your own network of sites. That's what STSE have, a HUGE network, that's how they manage to get to the top all the time.

In my experience jumping from page 1 to page 13 is similar to the Google -30 or infamous "950" penalty.

Although the fact it came back so soon is a good thing.

Are you doing anything particulary "spammy" or black hat with your backlinks? Could be an issue there.

Of course it is very normal to jump around the search engine rankings, it's a fluid thing, and not static at all.

Even in niches I am absolutely dominating (7-8 listings on page 1), these links still move around a lot, and some disappear altogether for a while, and come back again.

Make sure you're not just focusing on one type of link, mix it up and if you keep at it, you will get there eventually if you invest enough time and/or money.

Google also has quite different results by country. For example I have entries that show up on page 1 for using a google australia search, but the same links are on page 2 doing a US search.

    That's normal too.

Have you checked out your opposition. Checkout their backlinks, watch what they doing.

That is a competitive keyword phrase and chances are there are other people going hard for it as well, making it even more likely the rankings will move around a lot.

Heck it could even be me doing it. j/k I'm not.

    Cheers

      Hey, we are almost neighbors!

Yeah, jumping around like that is fairly common for new sites in big areas like that. It should settle down soon one way or the other. Hopefully toward the good end!

Steve, we need to get together sometime. Thanks for your input. I have experienced the jumping around before with my other websites and with my client websites. I am not doing anything spammy, so it should settle back down soon! Honestly to achieve the ranking so quickly it shocked me because I hadn't done much focused link building on the website. I was just writing new fresh content.

Thanks for your great feedback Tim. I can't imagine it would be a penalty as my linkbuilding hasn't been blackhat or anything spammy. Quite honestly I hadn't built many backlinks to it, but I am getting more natural links from people liking my posts and from other people finding out about me through two upcoming events I am speaking at.

From my experience I have seen rankings flucuate all over. It just always helps for peace of mind to hear other marketers having the same issues.

I will check out where I rank in the other country search engines. Thanks for that heads up.

it is a part of the madness that is IM.

Your sites will fluctuate as this is a dynamic environment.

Yeah, you are right on how it is a dynamic environment. I decided that it is better to not rely on just one niche website, but multiple niches for this very reason. That is also why I focus on different traffic strategies instead of just SEO.

Google drives everyone nuts. It's part of Google's culture. One of my favourite website got delisted for more than 5 times. But now it's in the first page as I wanted. So don't panic even if it gets delisted for 1 week.

If I were you I would just keep working hard and stop watching whether it is number 1 or 2 or 10.

    This is wasting your time.

Concentrate on the right things like adding value, driving traffic etc etc

    Just my 5 cents worth

Your rankings will always fluctuate. If you continue to build links to the site and post quality unique content then your ranking will begin to stabilise.

This has happened to me. It will get steady but keep promoting. Even after it steadies you may see it fluctuate when Google is doing a routine assessment but it should always come back to normal.

          Hi Paul,

There are three things that commonly cause the bouncing around that you are seeing:

          1. Data center updates - Google frequently tweaks their algorithm and then gradually roles out these updates one data center at a time. This is what is commonly known as the "Google Dance".

          2. QDF (Query Deserves Freshness) - Also called the freshness factor. Google will often Boost the rankings of a new page for a brief period of time to push fresh, current content to the top of the listings.

          3. Behavioral metrics - Google has been using a whole new class of metrics as factors in ranking that are based on page load times, TOS (time on site) bounce rates, previous search history and Geo-targeting. These will cause your rankings to bounce around a bit.

bro it is just normal for your kryphrases to be up and down , we need to understand that you are competing at the same time with thousands of other people worldwide that are also trying to optimize that same keyphrases for google to rank they high .
So do not bother yourself as far as your site get other traffic sources from links from other sites, forums, article marketing
