Just wanted to remind people to not make the mistake I just found. When I recreated my website I forgot to go to Yahoo, Bing and Google webmaster tools to make sure my robot.txt, sitemap and any authentication file was loaded on my server. Possibly a reason why my site was gradually ranking instead of flying by. I have no clue if this is a legitimate effect on SERP but something everyone should double check just to be sure you're doing everything right.

Geez - I added some pages the other day - and guess what - I forgot to update my sitemap.

Thank you very much for the reminder. It can be a mistake by an experienced person like me!

Make sure that you resubmit the sitemap to Google, etc., once you have updated it. If you are using WordPress the XML Sitemaps plugin will do all the work for you.

In other words, if your sitemap is tied to an XML file that is generated by lets say a PHP script... this should never have to be resubmitted to Google/Yahoo/Bing for them to stay updated, correct?

No. Just updating the XML file is not enough, whether you do it manually or have a script do it for you. You have to tell Google, etc., that you have updated it. If you don't they will find the update eventually but probably not on the timescale you prefer.

  • I have plenty of sites that I have never even bothered to submit to any of the above and they rank just fine. It's a lot of time wasted often to play with every little webmaster tool. Google will still crawl you. It's all about links. And if you have a good site structure google will find the links without a sitemap.

      Yes, this is true...!

However, submitting a sitemap seems to work well for me, so I keep doing it to all my major site!

Agreed. If your site has less than 5-10 pages then don't waste your time with all that. If you want inner pages to rank then build links to them. Sitemap just helps get them indexed, which they will as they are ranked anyway.

Thats why I use wordpress: plugins - so simple! But it's not that hard to edit robot.txt so either way is good but Wordpress is plug and play
