Try these:

1. Convert your website to .exe and submit it to software directories
2. Create keyword optimized article and spin it to hundreds of article directories
3. Bookmark your site with hundreds of bookmarking sites
4. Send Press Release to hundreds of free press release sites
5. Create video and upload to all video sites
6. Convert your website to pdf and submit it to e-book directories
7. Submit your website to thousands of web directories
8. Convert your video to podcast and submit to all podcast directories
9. Join blog network - MyArticleNetwork, ArticleMarketingAutomation, Linkvana, Backlink solutions and write unique articles for links.
10. Get one way backlinks from Angela & Paul backlinks, Steve's backlink Goldmine, Terry Kyle's Backlinks, TamilSEO's Backlinks and Mine Nuclear Link Booster 3!

If you mix few of these links, you should be ranking well

Create something that people will want to link to. (link bait)
An example is I use arcade games that people can put on their website/myspace/blog/ for free that brings me in some backlinks of this type.

If you are selling a product starting an affiliate program will also get you some decent backlinks.

Pure white hat is not easy to achieve, but you don't have to worry about Google, and normally it will attract links - naturally. Key to using white hat SEO is quality content!

Use content, free tools to setup link bait is one of the most common technique, and they always work.

  2. Create your own software. Offer to your visitors the opportunity to download it for free(from a reputable software site)

  I Forgot always keep your "hunt" for links in what honest reliable webmasters/SEO called "white neck" or "white collar" link exchange practices. The reason you have time and effort in your project and you do not want the search engines to "veto" your website.

  How about this?
  
  Go to the websites in position #1-#5 for the keyword you want to rank for. Then put them all into a free backlink checker tool like Backlinkwatch, Yahoo site explorer, or Check-Backlink. And then figure out how they got their links and get them all yourself.
  
  Then, find sites that other SEOers are backlinking, and get their links. Figure out how they got them, where they might have found them, and find your own. All the people who sell backlink packets are a good start...

See the smiley face in my signature?

A new strategy is to join high PR forums and such and make that smiley face into a backlink.

If you are a member of lots of forums this is a no brainer; however if they allow keywords in your signature then I would do that over the smiley. Just do the smiley when forums don't allow keywords.

You can do digg and reddit and other social bookmarks. If they are dofollow they are even better. You can check mine out below : ) its just the beginning but a link is a link and worth it.

I used to leave comment in dofollow blog, that's the most simplest way to get one-way quality backlinks. Forum posting is another great method too.

Thanks for all the great advice, is it best to submit to a few really high profile sites, or to spam hundrds of lesser sites?

I've heard too many sites can actually have a negative influence on my site, but I'm not sure what the rules of that are.

I've got a fair few backlinks already, but was wondering whether I should be very careful about which sites I link to.
