What do you consider to be an authority site?

What do you consider to be an authority site?

I ask because when one types a keyword into a SE I want to know what are the authority sites listed in the results.

Examples - wikipedia, webmd, etc. Which ones do you think are authority sites?

And are .edu and .gov sites considered authority sites by the search engines?

    Page rank? Check out websites that have a page rank of 10, or extremely high page ranks.

    I am sure you recognize many of these, and alot are in fact gov't related websites. But some are not, such as google, adobe, Microsoft, adobe etc...

    I also don't think that wikipedia has a very reliable authority as it can be edited by other users.

    To me, an authority site is any site that dominates the top positions in search engines under several keywords in a given niche.

    They can be .com, .net, .gov, etc. It's based on relevance of content.

    What about a non-authority site that is ranked well for a keyword, or is that a contradiction in terms.

    How can one spot that?

    It could be because of on-page seo and backlinks?

    I'm asking because maybe it would be easier to outrank such a site by having more backlinks or something as opposed to trying to outrank a site with a ton of backlinks, aged domain, etc.

    So perhaps a non-authority site are free sites and video sites that the search engine just considers to be an authority site for now (obviously any site can be outranked given enough time and work).

    I have a site that ranks in the 1st page of Google for 100+ keywords and is only a PR2 (with couple thousand organic back-links). So I am not sure of all the criteria to be a 9 or 10, but must be huge like 100,000+ back-links and top 100,000 Alexa in traffic etc.

    i also go for the first results on a keywords. if they are ranked well so they are authority sites in a way

    For me, any site that reach PR 5 is authority site to me! I love building authority site, and PR 5 is just what I want for all my sites !

    I think it depends, I personally would consider an authority site about a PR of 5+. I also assume that your site can be an authority on specific keywords, i.e. with sitelinks. I have several sites that are only PR2 but which have sitelinks for various keywords and has been runnign for several years and is an established brand. Its a combination of time and how long it has dominated the first position for as well..
