A page I am looking to compete against has the number 1 spot for my keyword with:
a PR of 1
zero back links to the page
160 links to the domain
no on page seo
4 years old

How is a site under the same keyword all the way down to spot 6 with:
a pr of 3
73 back links to the page
5k links to the domain
minor on page seo
8 years old

Sorry I am still a newbie, looking to launch my first ad sense campaign and have come across this situation with a number of keywords I am looking at, any idea what is causing those pages to rank the way they are?

At first glance, the top ranked page looks like it will be a cinch to beat, but ironically I become more intimidated as I look at the lower ranked pages; makes me wonder if the top ranked site has some secret weapon that is keeping it ranked above the other seemingly more powerful sites below it or something, gives me second thoughts about trying to rank for the keyword.

    The answer is... "who knows"

There are hundreds of factors that go into search engine rankings. Including quality of the sites linking to a site, and the quality of the sites linking to that site. Just looking at 4 or 5 factors is never going to give you the complete picture.

What is the domain PR? Domain PR plays a great influence...

The domain PR of the page ranked number 1 is PR3.

The domain PR of the page ranked number 6 is PR4.

The number one site probably has higher quality links for the specific keyword in the eyes of the search engine. What that means is that the sites linking to #1 probably have much better SEO than the links to site #6.

Page rank really doesn't matter that much because it is not reflective of the specific keyword the sites rank for
