my first page competition is pretty much mostly made up of ezine articles an articlebase and some yahoo answers, just wondering if its easy to rank ahead of these?

The number 1 is actually an ezine, how many backlinks do you think i will need for my website to get ranked over it? So far I've only submitted a couple articles but just wondering what I should aim for.

It is easy to outrank article and web 2.0 sites. Unless it is wikipedia or a authority site in the first position, you can go for it.

To outrank the ezine article, you have to write better content and get more backlinks than that ezinearticle with the keyword as anchor text.

Go to Yahoo and find the backlinks that article has got. If it has got a lot of backlinks, it will be better to drop that keyword and go for some other keyword.

is it "inlinks" that im looking under for that site?

if so it has about 80, not too much?

the keyword gets 40k searches a month so i think its worth going after or il at least be able to pass one of the lower websites relatively quick

Go to Yahoo and do a search for this:

link:URL of first position article -site:ezinearticles.com

This will give you all the links it has got from sites other than EzineArticles.Com

If it has only 80 backlinks but has 40k searches, you can go for it.

IMO, 80 is not many. If you've got Angela's backlinks pack, it will make the job easier. Bookmark, add the article to your blog/website sidebar which will give it a site wide link. You can also comment on dofollow blogs to get more backlinks.

80 backlinks are not hard to get. I'd say go for it.

    Cheers

First off, you will have a hard time beating out a big site that has loads of keyword targeted content and has been around for some time. Many of those sites have a lot of backlinks too, and have excellent Alexa ranks and Google page ranks. Plus, they have a constant flow of new content - pretty much every few minutes something new is going up on an article site.

You don't need to be #1. You only need to be in the top 5 or 10 and that shouldn't be too difficult if your keyword isn't too broad or have tons of competition.

i was actually surprised because its the same competition with and without quotes, the ezine article isn't even that good, but yeah it is ezine after all, and your right im happy just to make it to page 1. im sure most people back out of that article anyway, it doesn't even link to anything relevant so why they built links to it is beyond me.

Since you say the article is not good, just go and try to outrank it. Nothing beats trying out and see the result.

Position 1 in Google result does not mean it is good. Sometime it is because Google cannot find anything good and it will just have to put something close. If you can do a better article with lot of relevant keywords, I am sure it is quite easy to outrank that (at least appearing in page one).

Yes, this also apply to duplicated content.

Duplicated content shows up on the result, because no competition or they have authority backlinks!

Google will always show something in the SERP, trying to fill it up with all kinds of content, including duplicated, when they have not much choice.
