Random keywords ranking high?

After looking through my analytics account today, I noticed a lot of keywords were ranking on the first page of google. The weird thing is, I never really optimized my website or my backlinks for these keywords. The ones that I am optimizing were around pages 5-9.

So my question is, how are these keywords that I never intended to work on ranking so high and so quickly? One of them is a phrase that isn't found anywhere on my website.

Oh, I should also mention that this website is fairly new, it was indexed a little less than 3 weeks ago.

Those are long tail keywords. Actually if your site had enough PR, you can rank for many long tail keywords that related to your content, you don't have to optimize for them!

If you install Google analytic, you should find bunch of Good long tail keywords that you might not ever think of, those might be a goldmine, so keep digging, and remember to optimize for these keywords, backlink to it and get even more traffic!

If you have authority, more long tail traffic would come in, that's why a lot of content + authority + backlinks can be powerful!

One thing great about authority sites are - long tail traffic even without backlinks!

Yes, looking at your statistics (Analytics or other), you can see what people is looking for and maybe enhance it.

Also an other way (similar) is to check the website logs, if you have no statistics option.
