Press Release Distribution - How much is too much?

Is there something like overdoing press release submission? I mean if my press release is submitted to say 100 PR websites (including both free and paid) and then plenty of other webmasters pick this press release and publish it on their websites, can it hurt my SE rankings?

Thanks

It's worth remembering that nothing that can be done by a third party could harm you rankings. Otherwise, I would just go around submitting press releases with my competitors urls in them to harm their rankings.

If links from bad neighbourhood won't have a negative affect. Linking out to them might but that's a different matter.

Thanks for the response. But I doubt the statement quoted above.

Excessive links with the same anchor text, all coming from free directories (some of them lying on same class c ip) can definitely hurt one's ranking and it can be done by a third party. There are other methods which one can use to damage their competitor's ranking (irrespective of the ethical or productive point of view, but still there are some practices).

I think it's a myth. The links you mention may not add any value to your rankings, but they won't harm them.
