Moving up to AdWords?

I've been doing PPC for about a month now and haven't had any success so far using AdWords and AdCenter. Admittedly, I've been putting most of my attention on other methods. But something that's been really bothering me is AdWords' costs based on account history. The last campaign I tried to setup had really high costs, so I ended up with lousy positions and zero impressions. I figured that I may as well start a new account and start fresh. But then I thought "what if my campaign tanks again?"

AdWords just doesn't seem very newb friendly. Consequently, I'm wondering if it's better that I test my campaigns elsewhere and find some converting strategies before moving to AdWords. That way I don't have a lousy account history with high prices. What do you guys think?

    I have never used Adwords but still made money online.The problem with PPC is that the minute you stop paying, your traffic also stops.A much better way is to use free methods (writing articles and blogging), even though it takes some time to see traffic coming in but once it starts it will never stop.

    I got a $100 AdWords coupon from the Head of AdSense Marketing, so I wonder if even Google is seeing a slow down in revenue, given the horrid economic conditions the prevail for the past 18 months or so?

    Let me break some myths.

    There is no such thing. There is no "discount" given to older accounts or large spending accounts. Every advertiser is on the same playing field and costs are based on ad quality, supply and demand.

    Not at all recommended. First, there is no need for another account. Second, this is against Google's TOS and can get you banned.

    As for trying on other services before Adwords, sure. Most would start on Adwords first however, the main reason being able to reach a larger market. Doesn't mean it will be cheaper elsewhere. You may also find them just as difficult to use for a newb as Adwords.

    The principles of online advertising are the same whether you start with Google and work down or start with others and move up to Adwords.

    Yes use yahoo to see if you are getting some love, your high costs / tank you spoke would be that you tried to run a campaign that mr G did not like, so nothing wrong with what you are doing except your picking the wrong products.

      You can succeed with adwords but you have to be a bit clever with it.

      - Never try and be #1 for a competitive word, it's just too expensive. Being in position 2 or 3 gets the job done and is WAY cheaper.

      - Target keywords and phrase that are on your landing page. This increases conversions.

      - Make a list of all your keywords that being conversions and test them in adwords. One or two will have little or no competition. These words can generate you serious revenue and cost you a dime.

      Hope this helps.

      PS: Stay away from Yahoo PPC, its complete garbage. MSN PPC is ok.

    If you intend to work with search and not content network only I would suggest you to start with Bing. They have much less traffic but it's a great place to test campaigns, mainly because of the low CPC. However, if you are in a small niche Bing may be not able to offer you enough traffic.
