If you had to choose between bludewidgets.org and blue-widgets.com, what would you go for?

Purists don't like hyphens but I don't think they make much difference in the way that google sees your site.

I presume you mean 'bluewidgets.org'. This is a difficult one. Assuming that you are planning to make a reasonable income, I would register both, set up the real site on blue-widgets.com and set up a SEO friendly redirect from bluewidgets.org to blue-widgets.com.

However, you may wish to consider something else such as bluewidgetsguide.com.

      Yes, I meant bluewidgets.org, sorry.

I was wondering whether hyphens were really a no no. I've looked through old posts here and there's no real clear answer.

I did look through the top listing for some searches in google and hyphened domains were a distinct minority.

      jazbo, what's wrong with .orgs?

I would ignore the .org and register .com and .net

The difference is not in SEO but in the users recall for any users who want to come back to your site by just typing in the URL in the address bar. Habit dictates that users will omit the "-" and guess ".com" first. Thus, whichever alternative option you choose means that there is a learning curve on the part of the repeat visitor.

Having said that, if the visitor makes use of the assist that the browser is likely to give him/her for previously visited sites, the browser will aid the faulty memory.

I'd say that if you can't get your first choice dot com, then the alternative you choose isn't worth worrying about too much.

I'd prefer the domain name without the hyphen.

My choice would be .com first followed by .org and .net. I never liked hyphens. If you like hyphens, 2 words are not necessary. It's 3 words and more that you may like to use hyphens.
