Adsense low paying ads

Hi guys.

I have the following problem to solve:

I run a popular regional classified ads website. My problem is that i get very low priced clicks, even after optimizing the website.

The strange is that when i filter (using adsense competition filter) all the competition (other classifieds ads), i get 200% better cpc on clicks. But this makes somehow not steady my income.

I don't get why this happens ? Doesn't google show the most expensive ads on each website, or i get this wrong ?

Have you tried different ad formats?

Have you tried changing default Adsense settings (font, color etc) ?

Do you have more then one Adsense block? Like one in header, on in the middle and one in footer?
Your "most expensive" ads might be showing in the footer...

Are you using Categories? I've heard it can be helpful (they are even better targeted)

Nothing to do with all the above you say.

When i filter around 15 ads (all the same, classifieds), i get half of click rate but more money.

That can only mean that google doesn't show the best paying ads for me and for all i guess.

What I do when my cpc goes down on a certain site is I will take a look at the ads that are being served. I will start visiting the websites in a different window and look them over. If they are low quality affiliate sites I will filter them out since they are likely bidding low for their keywords. This always brings my cpc back up. I try to show ads from sites that are legitimate stores, or directly selling goods instead of affiliates.
