Do you hire or spend money to help with your SEO efforts? If so, I was wondering what is a reasonable amount to spend a month.

Basically, you don't have to pay for optimization of your site.. You can do some on-page and off-page SEO.. for on page SEO, you put the right key words in your title an header tags etc. etc.. make sure your web pages are "crawlable" by spiders.. for off-page optimization, you can do build backlinks to your site by submitting articles to directories, blog commenting etc etc..

I suggest you read the forum threads started by our brother warriors here.. some of these threads are very informative.. and entertaining also to read and learn from .

Learn everything yourself first. Only then think about outsourcing so you know what good value is and that you are not being "ripped off".

Another way of looking at this question is asking yourself 'How much is it worth to me to be top of the rankings for this list of keyphrases?'

Then work backwards to a cost that delivers a healthy ROI.

jazbo's right....you really need to learn thing inside and out before paying someone else to do them, or at least understand what their doing well enough to call them out if they're not doing things properly.

anyone can do SEO. it just takes time and you have to ask yourself what your time is worth. More or less than it would cost to pay someone else?

Agree with Jazbo's too, by getting yourself familiar with SEO will help you a lot rather than spending your dime out to freelancers out there. Tons of scammers outside there waiting for non-experienced seo player.

I would look at a one month budget to keep your add on top of google in the PPC area and divide that by 4 as a good starting point for a monthly budget for SEO work.

What we found is that as the SEO was improved, the relevance scores improved and the costs for PPC went way down. Now we have both ongoing link building done by us and professionals, and ongoing PPC. One of main website will close out the year at nearly 2 million dollars in sales so I feel that this has been a pretty effective technique.

My answer is don't waste your money, save it and focus on getting backlinks to your site

Some methods which you yourself can do initially are..
Forum participation. Again find forums that allow do follow links in the signatures and participate usefully and actively in the forums. Again have your website link as your signature

Press release. Not one I have had to use personally but I am told it works

Link bait. Write comprehensive articles on your website. If they are really good, other webmasters will naturally link to them

Link exchange. Again not one I use anymore, I tend to go for one way links, but they are better than no links at all

I am sure others will add more

        Good luck
