Custom built blog - what is definitely needed

Hey guys

As some of you know, I launched my online version of my business a while back.

I am integrating a blog now to replace the tumblr account we had.

Custom instead of wordpress, so that everything is managed in our custom cms - one login and all that.

However, I would be very grateful for your advise on what to include on it to ensure it is best suited for seo.

1) All comment links are no follow
2) Twitter feed to ensure fresh content when I'm not updating the blog
3) Automated pinging of the blog when content is published (which sites should I ping)

Please dont think me typin this post amounts to knowledge of what should be on the blog as I am only regurgitating bits I have amassed from here and any/all help is needed.

My test blog page is Kaizen Print and Marketing

Thanks for your help

Kaizen

If you are building custom blog for seo, make sure you do the following:
-Generate META description, and KW's for every page
    -no follow comments, as stated
-Generate RSS feed after every post
-Make proper use of <h1> tags for title
-Nice internal linking structure (navigate to posts by Category and Date)
-PING.. here is a big list from WP:
    Update Services WordPress Codex
Twitter feed is also a nice touch. Looks like you have made some progress already!
    Good Luck

    Thats a great list.

I'm aiming to build this site into an authority site via the blog and update one good post a day.

Also, should I host images or does linking to other sites images hurt seo.

      kaizen,

if it's not too late, i'd highly recommend going with wordpress. in my experience it's easily the best solution. there are plenty of free plugins to turn your blog into an seo machine.

regardless, here are some features i always look for in a blog:
      • automatic pinging of new content
      • RSS feeds (surprisingly, not all blogs come with these)
      • search engine friendly urls
      • proper h1 tags
      • automatic meta and title tag creation
      • the ability to integrate social chicklets
that's for starters, anyway. it all depends on what else you're doing with your website and other marketing channels. hope this helps!

I think hosting images on your own server would be better, but I'm not really sure about the effects on SEO. Hopefully someone else can chime in on this.

Also, im_advice is correct about the friendly URLS so I would also add that feature.

I think with CMS integration, you have made the correct decision coding the blog yourself. I love WP, but when I have the time, I always code my own scripts.

        Morning guys,

I have forwarded your comments onto my coder. He is probably the best talent I've come across in a long long time.

The main reason for integrating the blog is to retain the functions of the cms within it also. There is a lot of features on my site that just arent visible to joe public and I'd like to retain their use on the blog.

The guy I have working with me hasnt faltered at a challenge set to him yet, so I have thrown all your recommendations at him...no problem

        Thanks for your help all.

guys can you please explain why we need each comment as a seperate page
Also, does each page need its own rss and if so, how do I best use this (aggregators)
On each rss comment page, does the original post need to be included
